This is not mine, was looking at CL and found an adv for a Evinrude 120hp. The ad said ..

1985 Evinrude 120 HP Motor is seized due spark plug not being tight.

Could this really happen from a loose plug?

Vey doubtful, this is the small bore looper with bridgeport exhaust which are bad about bridge scuffing piston if overheated

Never heard of a loose plug causing seizing. And I have seen a six cylinder running with all plugs so loose they were actually waving at me. If an engine seizes you can bet it is from lack of oil or overheating. That can also cause a block/power head to warp. Stay away from that motor because most likely it will always have a problem.

Reminds me of the time a guy brought in his boat/motor for a "tune-up". When I got around to working on it, I found it to be seized. So, I pulled the plugs and they were full of rust, as of course, were the cylinders. Knowing a hopeless case when I see one, I just tossed the plugs in the splashwell and shoved the rig back out to the parking area and called the guy with the bad news. This was Saturday. Well, on Monday the guy came storming in, raging mad. Says he came in while we were closed on Sunday and looked at his motor. Says the motor was rusted because I left the plugs out and "moisture got in there".

End of the long story is, the motor was under warranty and obviously had not been sunk or anything. Evinrude supplied a replacement powerhead. Was that a great company, or what? And the guy thought I was a hero for getting him a new powerhead.

BTW, the (salt) water squirted into the exhaust ports from the exhaust cover area. That's why it was missing and he figured it needed a tune-up.

Thanks all for confirming what I was thinking.

It just sounded fishy.
