Before dropping the leg, you might want to try clearing out the tel tale hose where the water should be coming out. It may be that this is plugged with some debris and can be cleared out with a bit of wire or a straightened coat hanger.

All you need is a socket set. There are 5 bolts to remove on most lower units. 4 on either side or the plate just above where you have the water muffs and 1 "hidden" nut that is in the same location but at the front of the leg.

With these 5 bolts off you need to grab the lower leg with both hands, work it side to side while pulling down and it should separate. If it's been a long time since this has been done it might be very difficult to remove and require careful use of a pry bar of some sort.

Does the manual you have have a section on impeller replacement? Having all the pictures and step by step guide will be very helpful for you.

Oh yea i have sockets and bits like that just no fancy bearing pullers and stuff..

I reckon i could handle that :) I have the manual yep and it has a section on it i have literally just been looking at it.. They make it sound harder than you described it , sometime the books do though..

There is one thing i did notice while i was putting the sheet back over the boat tonight , it seemed to have brown muck dripped from the pee hole

Could be coincidence or maybe it needs a good rinse through ? so will look again in the morning ..

Like you say will try a clean through 1st ..

and thanks again for taking the time ,its appreciated

yeah try and clean it out as best you can. I once had a yamaha 40hp motor that didn't pee when I bought it but turned out to be that the hose was clogged with a bit of sand.

I removed the nossle from the end, cleared out the sand with water from a garden hose (holding thumb over to get some good pressure) and it started working like new.

Good luck!

Great Job! Motor is peeing like a champ now!

Next step is to check/change the lower unit gear case oil. When you do decide to do this a word of advice; Never, ever, under any circumstances remove the philips head screw. The gearcase lube (fiill and vent) screws that you remove to change the lube are flat.

Cheers!

Good news about the telltale and waterpump, sort of.

I have had mud dauber wasps plug up the telltale line a few times. No idea how they find that small hole but they lay eggs in there then seal it up with mud. They do a very good job at plugging it up :D The string from a weed trimmer works well for cleaning out the line.

If the motor is new to you and you don't know when the waterpump impeller was last changed, it would be a good idea to change it out as a preventative measure. You will read countless stories here about waterpump impellers that fail and cook the engine. General rule of thumb is to change it every other season. No special tools required and with a little practice it can be done in about 30 minutes and they are inexpensive.
