silver tranny oil

I have a 91 Moomba Boomerang. With a 5.0L pcm engine and a pcm-40 drive. Last week during our final ski run, the boat acted funny on take off. It felt like the prop was cavetating momentarily but then ran fine thru the slalom course at 34mph. The water temp was 54F, but I don't think this should affect anything. When we pulled the boat out of the water we checked the tranny oil and it was like a silver metallic paint. How are these transmissions made, do they have a clutch or a torque converter like a car. Can they slip. How difficult is it to pull it out of the boat. Something tells me I need a rebuild. Any info would be appreciated.

thank you,
Boomy

I assume its a Borg-Warner Velvet Drive, no it doesn't have a converter, but does have oil pump and wet clutches controlling planetary gears just like an car auto trans. So yes, it can slip and have gear problems. How many hours on it? 'nutcase

Re: silver tranny oil

metal shavings are always bad in a tranny...I might be inclined to change the oil and filter and run it agian and see it you can guage a wear per hour...

In my expereince, once a tranny begins to go, only way to really fix is a complete rebuild...

The boat has 545hrs, I assume the same for the tranny,

Howdy,

It might be good if you expand on what you mean by "silvery" oil. A picture might even help or put some in a clear glass so we can all see.

Now, having said that I'll agree with the point made above. "Silvery" oil in any transmission or gear box usually means a rebuild.

If you do a simple google search for "Velvet Drive Rebuild" you'll find a plethora of info. Also, service manuals for Velvet Drives are readily available. (online too)

You might need to pull the engine to get the trans out....it'll depend on how it's all installed.

Good luck,

Rick
