Does anyone have a simple diagram to follow to wire an ignition switch to my starter motor for a 1960's 40hp johnson. I am starting from scratch, I got the motor with no wiring or solenoid. I just want the switch for the starter motor, I dont want the electric choke. If anyone knows how the cut-out switch connects that would also be helpful? Thank you in advance for any help.

Batt + to momentary NO on key switch(start), other side of switch to start solenoid.

Batt - to NC on key switch (off), other side to kill wire from points.

Choke Solenoid is simple you can use a momentary toggle with +12 and the other side going to solenoid terminal.

if you have accessories then also wire + to the NO (not the momentary start)then to (i use a relay to switch heavier cable as I have stereo, lights, fishfinder etc) fuse panel.

Re: Simple Ignition switch

Purchase the 508180 ignition switch which will work with a great many engines including yours. It had a push in key function to operate the choke if desired. The terminals on the back of it are marked:

Raised "M" = Black wire to one set of points (kill circuit)
Reg "M" = Other black wire to other set of points (kill circuit)
"C" = With key pushed in, operates choke if desired.
"A" = Usually purple wire. 12v lead to accessories (tach etc)
"S" = Usually white wire to starter solenoid small 3/8" nut terminal
"B" = 12 volt supply from battery to switch

Re: Simple Ignition switch

3 prong will not work. it will blow up your coils.

simplest is just a push button for starter, and push button for choke. pull throttle back for it to die.

Starter Solenoid wiring.

Terminal # 1. positive cable from battery. And small lead to power starter switch and choke ( this should have a 20 amp inline fuse) ( these can just be push button switches) from switches, the lead goes directly to the choke solenoid. The start goes to terminal # 2 when the switch is activated it will activate the solenoid to send power to the starter.

Terminal # 3, grounds back to the battery directly.

Terminal # 4 is the positive battery cable directly to the starter motor.

You will have to have a ground cable attached to a good bolt on the engine block, back to the battery.

Push choke button choke should operate.
Push starter button, starter should turn motor.

Adjust your throttle cable so that the the control is pull all the way back the engine will die.

by 3 prong he means 3 position seeing as there is no such thing as a 3 prong switch, there is however a 3 pole. 3 prong term is used to describe a plug.

problem with just using push buttons you still need a way to kill power to the system.

An ignition switch is a 3 position with the third position being momentary OFF RUN and START start being a momentary. ie you have to hold it to be in start soon as you release it returns to RUN position. Much better on the motor to have an OFF/KILL position. Choking it out is rough.

You can pick up a cheap key ignition switch at any electronic store for like 10-15 bucks, it really isnt hard to wire up
Oh do remmeber to fuse everything, fire in a boat sucks.
