I have a 1996 Mercury Force 90hp. The tilt/trim motor runs, its full of fluid, but the motor will not move. When I loosen the release screw, the motor will lower but when I try to raise the motor by hand, it takes 2 people to get the motor in the air and with that the motor will not go high enough to use the locking tabs. I don't know if its the piston or the pump that needs to be rebuilt. I know with the release screw fully out,and I try to raise the motor, fluid shoots out the release hole with a 3 to 4 foot stream. Has anyone experience this. Any help would be helpful.

Thanks Mav6759

The 96 came with 2 different pumps.
Both were Mercury pumps.
The Mercury is usually a pretty good pump.

It does sound like the pumps bad.
They sell replacement pumps but first I'd go to the Mercury Forum and ask the techs there.
The OEM parts for both seem to be obsolete.

I guess my question would be, would the pump stop the motor from going up with the release screw loosened. I thought the job of the release screw was too release the pressure on the pump so the motor can be raised by hand.
