Soooo, there's only one reason to have installed one of these right? To hide damage? And the screws are those one-way type - you can't back them out with a regular screw driver...

It could be a preventative install... but i would bet shes damaged. Those skeggard kits come with red loctite too... so those screws will be a beech to remove. I would just leave it alone. You are not going to try to remove it are you?

Damage is fairly common on those aluminum skegs. Running with a shortened skeg can put your prop at risk.

Skeg gards offer a lower cost way easy to repair skeg damage. A few hand tools and a drill are all thats needed-- 15 minutes work.

The skegs can be welded as well; but it usully requires pulliing the lower bearing carrier on the drive to prevent heat damage to the seals and a skilled aluminum welder. ( local shop here gets about $300. )

I wonder why they call it a skeg guard, Seems like with a piece of stainless bolted to it that it might cause more damage if it hits something.

Yes, to the probability that it is damaged . . else why would you pay $100+ for a guard?

The 'screws' are allen type bolts and will come out.

More than likely it has been damaged. So why is it you want to take it off?

If you do decide to pull the skeg gard-- a little heat can help on the bolts as they are supposed to be put on with loctite.

Be sure to clean the bolts and do the same if/as you reinstall it and check for tightness periodically.

The ones I have seen have an allen head on both ends.

If thats not what's on thier you may want to post a pic. & define what you mean by a one way screw.

I would be highly surprised if that is an oem setup to have one way screws shown in your post.

If you remove them as its likely they will be damaged. You may then want to replace them with the correct ones If you can identify the brand of skeggard you shoul be able to order spares.

As far as actually removing them -- that's based on tools at hand, The actual bolt features and your experience. Very hard to say over the Internet.

Can you apply heat to them?
Can you get vise grips on them?
Can you drill a bolt head off?
Other methods?
