Great answers on the keel guard, now what about the skeg guard. There are two versions. A) Covers the front and lower area, B) Covers the entire skeg. $30.00 difference in price. B looks more efficient from a protection perspective. Has anyone installed either? What are your results? Why is it called a driveway when we park on it, and a parkway when we drive on it? :p

Re: Skeg Guards

I put a full skegguard on a damaged OMC 800 skeg. Works great. Have not had any problems. It did increase the skeg length slighly so I have to be carefull when lowering the unit while on the trailer in my drive.

I have a set of smart tabs on the boat as well so the stainless of the skegguard and the smart tabs makes the transom look kind of nice.

I would like to get skeg guards for my drives but I am concerned with having dissimilar metals in my marina.I get a little electrolysis as it is and I dont have ss props either.Charlie

Thanks, I felt strongly this would be another good investment. I have a SS prop, so I expect the electrolysis issue may not surface. Only been in layup 3 days and I'm working on April. Must be withdrawl!!!!

Re: Skeg Guards

I just installed the skeggard this past weekend on my new Alpha drive. It looks great with the stainless prop. Installation could not be easier. If you can plug in a light, you can do this with ease. I just wanted protection for the skeg as the kids learn how to boat.

I agree that the dissimilar metals are a problem. I hope that I made the right decision.

Re: Skeg Guards

How much of the skeg left do you need to install the guard? I have a buddy that broke off the skeg on his OMC Cobra drive. There is about 2.5" of it left. Do you think it will go on ok?
Thanks!

Re: Skeg Guards

How does a broken / missing skeg affect performance? Or is it just to protect the prop?

Re: Skeg Guards

I had a alpha drive years ago on a searay that must have had a broken skeg because It was cleanly cut off with just a small ridge left there whan I bought the boat.I eventually had one welded back on but I cant say I ever noticed a difference.I ran without a skeg for a few years. There is more of a chance of ruining a prop without a skeg .Charlie
