Slight knock where should I start?

Re: Slight knock where should I start?

Okay, first, your carb valve should be wide open upon WOT. This is easy to adjust if it is off a little, some folks will adjust it on the throttle cable, some on the little bar that connects the cam that rides the carb to the throttle linkage tower thing (cant remember the correct name). Timing is not difficult at all, there is a thread on here somewhere that outlines the procedure. I will look for it, but you can type it into the search bar. Do you have timing marks just above the carb intake? as some do not.

Yes mine does have the timing marks, but not on the flywheel though so I'll have to find TDC and mark it. I can't seem to adjust the WOT so the plate is wide open neither with the cable adjustment or the rod. I will do a search for the timing. Thanks

Ok, so to set the tdc mark pull the spark plugs, insert screw driver into top cylinder spark plug hole, rotate flywheel clockwise until screwdriver is all the way forced out, rock the flywheel back and forth, you will feel the point (on the screwdriver) that it stops going into and out of the cylinder, this is tdc. Mark the flywheel inline with the middle line of marks on the little tab, use a permanent sharpie. Do you have a timing light? if not you can do it without too. However, first did you adjust any of the linkage when you took it apart? If not, put it back on and try to start it. You will be able to tell if it is out of time.

The carb adjustment to WOT can be set on the throttle tower, the screw and locknut that rests on the block will allow you to adjust this. However, if any of the linkage has been moved during removal timing may be off.

Hey tater76, well I just got a verdict that either my number plug wire or coil is bad. When you installed your electronic ignition did you use the same coils, if you didn't do you still have your old ones?

Re: Slight knock where should I start?

Sheetsfa, I had magneto ignition before the swap so no coils. Are you sure you have power to both coils? I actually had to rewire my ignition switch for the newer style ignition, I didnt know this prior to install and found out the hard way. I could not get juice to the coils, rewired the switch at the dash and presto :) If you do have a bad coil they are pretty easy to find used or new. Unfortunately, I don't have one left over :( Oh, just remembered, my upper plug wire had a weak spark, I put a flashlight to the boot end (spark plug end) it was rusty inside. I pulled the rusty coil from inside it, stripped the wire to fresh copper, stuck it back together without the coil, and it works great until I get my new set from Iboats. Try new wires first if you are getting power to the coils :)

Yes I definitely have power to both, the coil that is giving me problems has a spark sometimes but not all the time. I'm going to check my point gap, according to the manual it can give you a weak or no spark at the coil. Does yours have the two point system on it?

Re: Slight knock where should I start?

Mine does have dual points, I was going to replace them when I did the swap but I'm cheap so I cleaned them and regapped :) Check your condensors (the little can looking guys next to the points) I have had more issues with condensors than anything else, and they will cause a no spark condition. If you decide to replace them, you will find them on Iboats or from your NAPA parts store part #FM200, they are around $11-$13.00 for one at NAPA. Once again, check/replace your plug wires, they might be part of the issue too?

Actually mine doesn't have the condensers under the flywheel mine are built into the coils. Hopefully I'll have a chance to check my gap today and if that's good then I'll move to the plug wires, do you know if I'm able to get those at napa?

Yep, they have universal kits that require you to cut the wires to your desired length and they are pretty cheap. They can also get you any part you need, but they are much more expensive than Iboats on most things :(
