Hello Everyone.

Can you tell me if Evinrude makes a 10 or 15hp 2 stroke that has the emission sticker. I'm in California and would like a 2 stroke that I can use anywhere. My boat is a 14' aluminum Valco tinny. Thanks.

Re: Small E-Tec?

The smallest regular E-Tec offered is 25 hp.
They do offer a 15hp High Output (HO) that is a long shaft (20 or 25") that is intended as a kicker. IMHO it is a dog at 180 lbs.
Evinrude market a line of 3.5 to 15hp 4 strokes, manufactured by Tohatsu, that are EPA and CARB compliant. The 4-stroke 15hp is more reasonable at 114 lbs.

Re: Small E-Tec?

The 15 HO E-TEC is built with heavy duty transom clamp mounts, and includes a hydraulic tilt and trim unit and electric start. Those are the reasons it is so heavy and it is designed for a kicker or trolling motor on larger boats. It will work on the back of smaller boats if they can handle the weight, but the low-pitch propeller will have to be replaced to have the rpm in the recommended range since an aluminum boat is much faster.

Thanks for your input guys. That's a lot of weight for a tinny. My 9.9 Force weighs in at 65 lbs. What brand of 10 hp outboard 4 stroke would you buy for a 14' tinny? I don't need electric start and all of that other stuff.

Re: Small E-Tec?

Small Merc, Evinrude and Tohatsu motors are all made by the same company. Details (throttle, shifter, etc.) can be different between the three. A 9.8hp Evinrude 4 stroke manual is 81 lbs. The other real choices are Yamaha and Honda.

I really don't think you can go wrong with any of them, so I'd choose the one with the closest dealer to you.

Thanks guys. I have a Mercury dealer near me. He quoted the 9.9 hp Merc. at about $2100, which sounds pretty good. In the meantime I think I'll run my Force as long as they will let me.
