smart tabs installation on bayliner

Hi? i am having a problem installing smart tabs on my 18ft 1995 bayliner capri boat. rear end of the boat doesn't have enough flat surface to mount them. espcially when i measure 3" in from the portside. the smart tabs will not be on the same surface or plane. what am i suppose to do? has anyone had this problem and how do you went about to get them installed? pls help and picture will also help and measurement. thanks also.

Here is how mine are mounted. After I had mounted them I found out about moving the tab bracket to the rear of the tab, on mine I would have to drill another hole, this would help the angle of the cylinder. The work fine just like they are so I am not too worried about changing the setup and drilling more holes in my boat. The new stainless tabs come drilled to locate the bracket in either place. You can also go to this link and look at the photos on Nauticus site, there are several sets to cover most transoms. http://www.nauticusinc.com/installation.htm Uou can also take photos and send them to Nauticus and call them, they are very helpful on installs and anything related to the tabs.

but the manufacturer said they have to be mounted on the same surface. my transome look like yours.

With the Stainless steel tabs not necessarily so, with the composite tabs that may be true, something about the cylinder mounting I think makes them that way. Call Nauticus, 800-233-0194, talk to them, they can advise you as to which one is best or maybe they have a different setup now for the composite tabs that will allow my mounting setup. My boat is in the installations pics on their site, I did talk to John about mine before I installed. They are good people and will work with you to get things right.

You may need to get the SS tabs, the ones I have use a ball stud for the pivot point on both ends of the cylinders, that allows for the full range of movement when the cylinder is mounted like mine. The SX tabs have clevis type pivot which will bind and break when the tabs lifts or retracts. I check the website and install warnings for SX and they state that for transoms like ours that you should use the SS tabs or call 800-233-0194 for advice. I am educating myself on the current models of tabs as I type, I have to make a correction to something I said, the SS tabs no longer use a ball stud mount, they now use a bolt and jam nuts, this still allows the full range of motion needed. Call Nauticus and talk to them, I feel sure they can help.

Here is mine, It shouldn't matter what type they are, composite or stainless. The tabs should usually be mounted as far starboard and port as you can get them. You want them to be about 3 to 4 inches in from the outside hull of the boat. The wider there spead the better there going to work. The trim tab should be on an even plane where it mounts to the hull. This means on the same angle and even with the bottom of the hull. The chines do not matter where there located. Follow the hull plane.
The way he has them mounted above is just fine, the cylinders are going to compress regardless of where they are mounted. They will also only compress to a certain pressure depending on what cylinders you have and. The mounting surface if possible should be mounted on the same surface but that same surface doesn't necessarily have to be at a 90 degree angle. It is best to call John at Nauticus and get there opinion. They will tell you right where they need to go and how they should be mounted for your particular boat. Your link to pics does not work. Mount them like rzkas and you will be good to go. even though your transom looks like the first pics posted, the actuators are still on the same surface, the surface just happens to change in shape. The 25 degree angle is in relation to the bottom, not the back of the transom. get your 25 degrees and mount the actuator cylinder where ever it ends up being. The tabs are going to do the job as long as it is 25 degrees in relation to the bottom of the hull is there. If my boat had a angled or stepped out stern, I would be mounting them the same way. You have posted to a thread that is several years old, start a new thread with pics and questions. Just for the record I think you could put the stainless steel tabs on your boat, may have to move a little closer to center but not much.
