Ok guys im thinking about purchasing some Smart Tabs for a 95 marada mx3. I went out and looked at the boat this evening and am kind of stumped as to where I would be able to mount them. Any suggestions or recomendations would be greatly appreciated. Below is a picture of the transome.

More than likely they will go on the extended hull under the blue platform. Where the hull chines are visable from the stern. They will be inset about 3 to 4 inches in from each side and be angled to follow the bottom of the hull profile.

I would call them and send them a email with the picture you posted and maybe a side pic as well and they will tell you exactly the proper location and mounting for your particular style boat.

You will love the smart tabs. good luck.

I e-mailed nauticus two days ago and sent them multiple pictures no reply. Called them and talked to a guy about which ones I needed so got that out of the way but he said I needed 10" to mount them. On the extended hull I barely have 7" max :/ I guess I will wait for their response to my email. I have barely enough room to mount them to the transome beside the outdrive buy it will be cutting it close as far as clearance goes ... or at least it looks that way. Do you know if the actuators can be mounted verticle (mount the top to the bottom of the extended hull)?

Got to ask. Why do you need tabs? You have trim on your I/O

Re: Smart Tabs mounting location

To assist in the hole shot and overall handling while on plane ... Product says it makes the boats hole shot improve, Rides better at higher speeds, and helps with fuel consumption among other things.
ADVANTAGES
New Operating Speeds:
In addition to a more level ride at slower speeds, theminimum planing speed is significantly reduced. The result is that you will be able to run at the intermediate (comfortable) range which is not available without trim tabs. Refer to "Typical Speed Curve" Chart on page #3.(Please note that this chart is not meant to represent your specific boat). Faster Acceleration:
The additional "lift" not only reduces the "on plane" speed, but it allows the prop to efficiently attack the water, using all of the energy to propel the boat forward. Trimming the engine to bring the bow down uses some of the prop energy to correct the boat attitude. Improved Stability:
The additional surface/planing area on either side of the prop, with its continuous pressure, can improve high speed stability and minimize if not eliminate "chine walk".
Since the operation of each trim plate is independent, automatic, and speed sensitive the stability Through turns will also improve. When turning the inside tab will take a shorter path than the outside tab, and tend to move down due to the lower water pressure. This will help anchor the turn.

Improved Economy: This advantage will come in two forms, reduced fuel consumption and reduced engine fatigue due to less resistance and stress.

Improved Safety:
Better visibility at slower speeds is an obvious advantage, but improved handling, reduced hull stress, and a smaller wake also add up to more safety.

With that type of hull the best place to mount the smart tabs is back on the shelf at the store where you found them. Smart tabs are a great product that work for about 50% of the boats out there, yours isn't one of them.

Trim of the motor and trim of the outdrive do absolutely nothing compared to each other. Why don't you go to the Nauticus site and learn about trim tabs. Any stern drive boat will gain performance by adding tabs.

I love quotes like this, you obviously know what you are talking about or maybe not! They will work on any boat up to 30 feet.;) I'm guessing you have never used smart tabs! There have been plenty right on this forum alone with this type of stern configuration that run smart tabs. ;)

I e-mailed nauticus two days ago and sent them multiple pictures no reply. Called them and talked to a guy about which ones I needed so got that out of the way but he said I needed 10" to mount them. Some boats have no choice but to mount them to the bottom of the platform. Again, best to let nauticus get back to you on that. But it looks like you have alot more than 7" on the back where your chines are showing. The tab will be mounted there for sure, it will start from about 3 inches in and follow the angle. It does not matter if it alignes over the inner chine. It will just follow the angle of the hull regardless.

Nauticus will have to answer your question on wether or not the top mount will work. Others here with similar hulls/sterns have installed them with out any negative issues. I will play with your picture and show you where I am talking about. Nauticus usually takes a few days on emails. Calling them is faster, I would call them again and get someone to find your email while On the phone.

Re: Smart Tabs mounting location

If you only have 7 inches from the bottom of hull to the bottom of platform, the actuators will probably have to be mounted on the underneath of the platform. remember to measure on an angle of the center of tab, this might gain you more and is the way they will be mounted, 90 degrees from the slanted tab following the hull.

Let us know how it works out.

So they can be mounted to the bottom of the hull extension?

If you mean the back of the hull extension, then yes. If your hull extentions are part of the same plane of the hull yes. Take a side pic and angle from underneath from the back of the stern and post.

I had a difficult installation on my transom which is contoured in two directions and has a ceiling like yours.

Mine could only be placed fairly close to the drive right about where your straps are. You have more room than i did.

They work wonderfully and do EVERYTHING they advertise them to do. Stick with it and get um mounted.

I think that is where Im going to have to mount them Naticus told me that they have to have 10" of clearance from the drive and since the gas actuator is 10" I need at least 10.5" of mounting serface from the bottom of the hull to top mounting bracket. I would like to get them on the outside closer to the chine but I just dont think there will be enough room and still have the correct angle and be able to adjust the lift pressure. I will see if I have some more pictures if not I will take some tonight and post them tomorrow.

Coopin,

I think you may have a tough time. Your situation is similar to mine. I'd suggest you cut a piece of cardboard about the size of the tab you are considering and see of you have enough clearance to the drive.

I didn't.

coopin87, resend your email, wait about an hour then call, tell them you sent email, they will find it and help you. They get a lot of email traffic and could have missed your first one. They are good people and will do all they can to help you, one of the few companies that you can call and the owner may be the person who answers the phone. Make sure you have pics showing all the angles and locations clearly.

This is what i did! They looked right away when i called and even sent me pictures and waited for me to receive and open them so we could discuss my install. Very helpful bunch!

I would say mine are about 8 inches from the drive. I was pretty worried. I installed and adjusted per the instructions and have never touched them since. My 2500lb, 19 foot, 4.3 powered, bow rider now jumps out of the water and stays on plane down to about 18 mph. Still runs 50mph on the top end.

Before it was an absolute pig out of the hole and took forever to plane.

I will give them a call again tomorrow in the mean time here are some pictures of the transom that you guys asked for. I think I will have to put them close to where the straps are because hull extention is only 5" on the outsides of the chine to the top of the flat extention.

Would cutting a corner for the stern drive work? Maybe you don't need 10 full inches of trim tabs.

If you send them those 3 pictures they will be able to tell you what to do. You have more room to get them further away from the drive than i did. I'm not sure it is out of the question that you might be able to mount them on that outer portion. You will need some measurements for them i bet.

Ive looked for my pictures but must have deleted them.
