Smart Tabs Vs. Conventional trim tabs?

Has anyone installed or tested both of these? I have a new aluminum jet boat that is porpoising (sic) badly at the upper speed end and am going to need something to compensate. I have moved all of the weight around to attempt to compensate for the inboard jet weight, and it does help some.

The Smart Tabs seem like a natural choice for ease of operation, but I am leery of things that seem too easy...?

2003 Wooldridge 20' Sport 2000. 350 CI inboard jet with a Kodiak 3 stage jet system.

Re: Smart Tabs Vs. Conventional trim tabs?

I installed SmartTabs on my 15 foot Bayliner Jazz jet boat this season. I am very pleased with them. The boat used to porpoise badly and fall off plane in a sharp turn. It now planes at a much slower speed and doesn't porpoise at all.

The other benefit is a reduced deck angle when coming up on the step. Before the tabs, my dog used to slide down the foredeck and end up in my lap becaused the boat would pitch up so much coming out of the hole. Now it hardly pitches at all and gets on plane almost as soon as I open the throttle. I would not have believed that two little 9x12 inch plates could make such a difference. I may have lost a knot or two at top end, but it was well worth it.

The company was also great to deal with. On my boat I had to mount the shock struts to the underside of the swim deck. The standard brackets used for mounting on the transom wouldn't work. They sent me some different brackets at no charge.

I haven't tried the adujstable tabs to be able to give a comparison, but my opinion is that on a small boat like mine, these SmartTabs are probably about 90% as good as the adjustable ones at way less than half the cost and hassle.

Re: Smart Tabs Vs. Conventional trim tabs?

Kev_alaska..... First post on this forum so I would like to say hi to everyone. Know thats out of the way.... it's nice to be able to remark on something I have had experance with. I installed a pair of smart tabs on a 12' boat I built for son {Glen-L TNT} and the performance, speed and the bunny hopping were all improved. In fact I had to back off the downward force to pull up the bow to gain a little more speed. Before I bought the smart tabs I was going to make my own trim tabs but I'm realy glad I did't because the fit and finish of smart tabs looks very professional. Like Rowhome said for a little boats like ours {mine being alot smaller} I think it's worth the investment.

Re: Smart Tabs Vs. Conventional trim tabs?

to kev-alaska
and anyone else running Smart Tabs - if the boat does not run faster by at least 2 to 4 MPH then the pressure setting on the Trim plate bracket is to high. Simply reduce the pessure. The adjustment is easy, and when set correctly the boat will accelerate faster, plane at much lower speeds (great for pulling inflatable toys and skiers) and run faster on the top end. Why more top speed? When the motor trim is not needed to correct the porpoising and boat attitude, it can be trimed for the most efficient bite, thus more speed! There is no drag - the plates are up once you are on plane, but the Actuators work like a suspension system on a car to smooth everything out. And it is always active! I love the way the boat stops now because the stern never drops, it stops flat with no water in the transom well. ;)
