Looking for opinions on pros/cons for taking the gauge route or the gateway route.

My main goal is to have the ability to track fuel usage. Originally I was thinking of taking the gateway path and hook up to my GPS, but my tach is a little on the bouncy side I have to smack the gauge at times so it will read correctly. Now I'm thinking going with a smartcraft tach gauge.

If I understand correctly, either way I go, I will need some type "cabling" to get from the engine to the helm. Either a 2k backbone or cabling (possibly smartcraft hub) for the gauge.

Is the same engine data available including engine codes regardless of which path is taken? I understand that the available data is dependent on the MCM/PCM.

Your going to need a $400+ gateway either way.

NMEA 2000 buys you nothing unless you have a full featured, NMEA 2000 compliant display to support it.

I have a Lowrance Elite that supports 2k, but I know it's far from a bonafide MFD.

Is there a way to determine what's available?
Outside of navigation related info, is there any engine data that would be displayed on a smartcraft gauge that would be transmitted over 2k from the gateway?
