I've got a friend who has a 1997 200EFI-XL Merc. ser # G508926. The problem is it's smokes excessively at idle speeds in slow wake zones. If you take it out and run it at wot it clears up and runs good. Smokes again the next time in the slow wake zone. I'm an OMC person and don't know anything about Mercs. Any ideas ?? Thank You.

Re: Smoking Mercury

The on-board oil tank is lightly pressurized thru a valve from the crankcase to push oil to the motor tank. If that valve is sticking/defective it will over-pressure the on-board tank causing the oiling to run overly rich on oil, smoking at low throttle.

Re: Smoking Mercury

This must have two lines going to the oil tank then. One for oil and one for pressure?? Could you disconnect the pressue line, making sure of course the oil tank on the mtr was full and then try it to see if the smoking stopped?? Thanks Again .
