same boat i posted about last week. 1999 VP 5.7 sx drive. last week shut down, no oil all in bilge, certified mach said hole i oil pan, after the previous week, pulling engine servicing outdrive, pulling engine, replacing starter, exhaust mainfold, water pump, this week replaced oil pan. said good to go. i was aboard, launched, idle out of no wake 10-15 minutes, all guages good, powered up for 4-5 miniutes, notice temp rising, went to idle and stalled. noticed smell opened doghouse and smoke billowed out, temp went to 235 and stayed there.. got pfd's and extinguisher out, did not use, when smoke started to clear enough to see the engine, i check oil "0" on dip stick, none in bilge. the snap, crackle, pop, went on for 15 minutes. good boater tow us in again. what the hell happened? we also run in the drive 30 mins before launching, and no sign if trouble.

No possible way of knowing what happened without looking at it. Wouldn't even want to guess.
But, after your previous post, I'm beginning to wonder what all has happened to that engine/boat before the manifolds and risers being changed and the oil pan leak.
Did the engine get overheated "Big Time" that eventually led to the manifolds and risers being replaced?
The hole in the oil pan? Did it run out of oil once before it was noticed?
Lots of questions, and really hard to say without actually seeing the engine and talking with the owner first hand.

don, it is a new boat to sis & BIL, ran great on 4 on 5 trips, then starter shorted, when they washed it down, and forgot to remove the plug, went to shop for a starter, and general service. mech said it needed the other things, and they said, do it, as preventative maint. all of this has happened due to a shorted starter. where did 5 quarts of oil disappear to? once to the bilge, now where. boiled away? it was a horrible rancid smell, with white to light gray smoke.

Side note
I hade I feeling the shop that did the orig
work talked your family into the mani's.
Yet they didn't see the bad pan.
I shake my head, this is bad for the industry.

With a raw water cooled engine, a cracked block or head gasket broken between an oil and water passage, the oil could have gone out the back as exhaust. If it has a closed cooling system (with heat exchanger) look in the heat exchanger for oil and/or water instead of antifreeze.

Get over it calwldlif not all part time marine techs are perfect like you appear to be.
Most don't get to work year round, and it's hard to find GREAT part time help. Especially when everyone thinks a marine tech should only work for $10 an hour and know everything, immediatly, without a mistake, and be on call 24-7 through the summer because a boat is a TOY, and not a real piece of expensive machinery.

Dude
I got a right to my opinion
I think they were looking at things to sell
the "service manager" isn't a kid making 10.00 an hour
Yes your in the business, do you think that
other mechanics deserve apass because they
are in the same business.
Are you telling me a parttimer is allowed to
sell work, noone in the chain of command
checks a newbee?
I will say again the shop should have found a pan that
gave out the first time it wasused after repair.
a 1 inch hole is a big rust spot.
You were out of line to give me this perfect ****!

Yes, you have a right to your opinion, and sorry for lashing out like I did.
I just get so F#%&#@ tired of hearing "The Tech did this" , "The mech did that", the Mech didn't do this or that, they cost me a fortune and all the other BS.
It's a real shame people don't hear about most of the mechanics and techs out there that do a good job. People trust there boats to them year after year and have no problem.
I don't really care what industry it's in, there will be problems, and forums like this only highlight the bad. But to keep saying "I Told You So" and blaming a tech/mechanic when you don't even know the facts is just plain bull ****.

I think you are an ambasador
that is good for the industry
You help alot of people
"who do it themselves"
this is contrary to your business
well being.
In regards to the forementioned problem.
There are people in all professions
that are out for a buck. this is often at the
publics expense. It gives a bad name to many
people who don't deserve it.
I like facts to be out there good or bad.
I will call out a coworker if it needs bedone.

I don't know what was said by who to who about what.
I know there are customers who make service hard.
Mistakes happen, human beings ya know.
In this particular case i find it upsetting that
Tash had problems. If someone who reads these boards
realizes that pans rust, and should be looked at good.
I think you go out of your way for people :)
I also don't know how you put up with some of the
yahoos I know exist.

peace

Sometimes I let it ride some times I don't. Sometimes I jump when I shouldn't, and I make my fair share of mistakes. I think we are on the same page, just speak it differently.
Peace back at ya.

Re: snap,crackle,pops, sizzle, sizzzle.UPDATE

would you believe the OIL FAIRY came during the night and put oil in it. it's now showing full, but appears to be siezed. don it is sea water cooled.

Cal the people doing the work has a great reputation, talked with him last night, we're just looking for a cause,

i agreed with the manifold changing as the is an almost 8 y/o engine, only 56 hours, but salt water run, and never been changed,

Awful hard to save an engine that previously ran out of oil. Looks like a rebuild or crate motor is in the future.

Re: snap,crackle,pops, sizzle, sizzzle.UPDATE

Since you do have oil, my guess is you lost cooling water, perhaps a plastic bag over the intake. With no water, it would burn the inside of the exhaust hoses. Steam and smoke from the burned hoses.
It could also be a drive locked up and smoked the coupler. Of course that doesn't explain the overheat.
If it was an overheat that siezed the engine, my guess it got a lot hotter than 235° but because there wasn't any water in the engine, the gauge wouldn't read correctly either.

Keith, I think he meant the engine did have oil in it and it was just checked/read incorrectly. Panic does that ya know :=

Super hot oil
will be hard to see on the stick
It acts like water.

Try this scenario, water pump or in general cooling system fails, temps rise and the headfs get really hot. Head cracks or maybe gasket gets crushed from expansion pressure valve guides melt and thats likely where your oil went. probably through the exhaust.
been there done that.

Drain the oil and see if water filled it back up. If it wasn't running when the water got in the engine, it won't be mixed and milky. As you pull the stick out now what oil that was in the engine is is showing on the stick and the water is being wiped off by said oil.
