From time to time I will see an item with multiple bids in succession from the same bidder. Why would anyone bid against themselves?

I thought those bids were the result of the proxy bidding. Each time the guy upped his bid, either manually, or through the proxy, he was outbid by another bidder's proxy.

Another thing.
When you see only 2 bids and it's the same bidder, it means that he upped his maximum.
