Pull the drive, start the engine again. See if you still have a vibration/noise.

Re: So I smoked it....now what?

I know its never good to do in excess but it was only for a second like when you rev a car engine briefly. Stupid? Obviously it was at this point, I have no problem admitting that.
Well, after reading exactly what you did, I'm thinking that you a spun bearing.....And it wouldn't have mattered if you revved it up or not....It was still gonna happen.

Pull the engine and turn it upside-down and wiggle the rods....You'll probably find it. ....but before you do, pull the drive and see what it sounds like with the drive off.

Once you get it fixed, you should probably use an alignment tool when you put the drive back in.

yep i would do what the guys suggest. pull outdrive hook up hose to engine and see what happens. These guys are full of helpful hints if you listen to them. I have never worked on a boat befor and in the last week i have pulled the engine, outdrive, bell houseing, and redoing all the bellows shift cable and such.

dont take it personal temperedtim, the new guy always gets made to feel small by the season vet on these kind of boards. they have seen so many posts they assume everyone should know everything and as you can see the rest of the seasoned vets agree with them. they could have used plain english, but then that wouldnt be like a seasoned pro. you ever watch drag racing? they put it on the rev limiter for a few seconds before blast off, same with motorcycles, reving in nuetral wont hurt a good motor. check yours out it might be cheaper to overhaul it if you can do it. if the (unspeakable)hull is good like you say then fix it and enjoy it....

I think that if the bearing was in good condition, it would have not spun. That bearing was shot and it would have spun sooner or later, if that is the case. I agree that you should remove the drive and then start it to see if the noise is still there. Regardless a boat that age in good condition is worth repairing.

Have a great day,

Rob.

kevin,oh so if it was only that easy....and no one here tries to make any one feel "small" as you say.theres a wealth of knowledge here.available at a key stroke...and even though i bow to the experience and knowledge of my mentors here(since i've only considered it a profession for 30 years now)there are many here that forgotten more about marine mechanical matters than i will ever strive to know,i do know that in the expert minds of those who designed, prototyped, redesigned, built, dissassembled, rejoiced in the ups and downs of the entire process of the present day 3.0 marine engine as such ,darnit forgot to install a rev limiter...i am far from one of the experts you referenced eariler but i will be more than glad to help you if i can...

I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't the engine that dropped a bearing, but the gimbal bearing or u-joints failed. Pull the outdrive off and inspect for damage. There is no reason a quick run up to 4K should have hurt anything unless it was bound to happen. He could even change his oil to see if there are metal parts and ball bearings coming out of the pan. A magnet would help.

Re: So I smoked it....now what?

Took off the drive unit this morning and hooked up the hose directly to the water inlet. Still a mess. U joint looked fine, teeth on drive shaft were fine....engine still sounds like its going to grenade. Time for me to start looking at engines or think about having work done to this one. Threre is a sweet used 3.0 On Ebay right now for 1400...with everything attached, ready to drop in. I dont have quite 1400 right now though. I think that Ill look for something like that. Also since my drive unit is leaking water into the gears i might look at a new drive unit. Are the non-mercruiser ones any good? With a good used motor and a new unit I think Ill have lots of boating to do. The Hull is chip free its has no signs of any structural damage. The carpets are dirty and the seats have a few tears but its been sitting for a while, nothing a week of good scrubbing wont fix. So anyone looking for a leaky drive unit and a bad bearing motor...real cheap :) I feel like I should replace the motor with used simply because there is rust near the plug holes.....thermostat housing is all rusted....seems like if I can find a newer 3.0 with everything still attached Id be better off. Any opinions on what to do from here?

Re: So I smoked it....now what?

What he said ^^^^^ there is nothing I have read here that says it is a bearing. Could be, but it also might be top end, push rod, dropped valve etc. etc. etc. Also agree that revving to 4000 RPM in neutral will not hurt anything (even on muffs with the exception of possible impeller damage) if it is not being overheated and there was nothing wrong to begin with.

Also the thought of looking at the oil is good, but an easier and more definitive thing to do is pull the oil filter, cut it open and look into the the pleats. What's left of any spun bearing will be there . . . ;)

Tear it down before you go get a new used engine. Might be cheaper to fix this one. Drive leaking water into oil, also could be cheaper to replace. Tear into and keep posting we are all here to help. We are all idiots at somepoint just ask my wife she will tell you im what she calls 99-1 99% idiot and 1% stupid. Good luck

What I was going to suggest... You'll find your bearing/bearings as a shiny dust in the filter if so. It's messy and watch the hands while cutting the filter.

Re: So I smoked it....now what?

Hey guys,
Ya I have no idea if its a bearing or not...all I do know is that I know when an engine sounds like its ready to blow a piston out of the block (seen it) and thats what it sounds like. I gotta save some cash anyways so in the mean time I might rip it apart. Anyone have any good ways to get these things out of the engine bay? I took it out once using a buddies tractor but I wanna take my boat home and do the work there...I suppose I could take it out at my buddues and trailer it home.

Re: So I smoked it....now what?

Some engine hoists are tall enough depending on the height of the gunwhale. I used one to remove/reinstall a 351 V8 in a 20ft ski boat, but I had to remove the tires from one side of the trailer to get the extra inch or two I needed to clear the side. I have even heard of people using pulleys or block-n-tackle type systems on the ceiling joists or even a hefty tree branch!
