So what goes in your fuel

I've read so many fuel additive and oil threads I've concluded everything is evil and everything is manna from heaven.

In other words still as confused as ever.

I know I have to mix oil 50:1, motor is an 89 Johnson 48.

Boat shop guy recommended Carbon Gaurd. Any reason for that over Seafoam which I have used on small 2 cycles for a while.

Any preferences for 2 cycle oil?

I know I'm probably going to get as many varied opinions as I have already read. But maybe I'll see some trends.

Yeah, your boat shop guy doesn't sell Seafoam.


Use whatever brand of the correctly rated 2 cycle oil that you like. Anything from the bargain basement Walmart brands, to the Evil Overpriced Johnson or Evinrude brands.

And yeah, ask 50 people this question and you'll get 75 opinions.

My own philosophy is that I don't put anything but gas in my gas tank, except some Stabil for seasonal storage. My current boat is a 4 stroke, but even so I never was much a believer in additives in any of my numerous 2 and 4 cycle engines.

So far I guess I'm lucky, not having any problems that can be traced to the fuel I'm using.

He likes the carbon gaurd because he sells it, if he sold Amsoil he would love that, Sea foam is a very good product that actually works, it has been around forever and can be had at any number of places, the Speedway down from my house sells it, so I use that.

With my dad it was Marvel Mystery oil, he used it in EVERYTHING, I think he put some on his cereal in the morning.

As far as oil the Super Tech from Wal Mart is good oil cheap and all you need for a 23 year old engine, Wal Mart of coarse doesn't make anything so it is a brand name oil in a different jug and again you can easily get it.

Now if you had a brand new Yamaha or Etec maybe synthetic makes sense but for an older engine like yours Super Tech is the ticket.



I have run it for years and my '81 Evinrude 50 for years and it still has 138 compression.

if using gasoline with alcohol, I add the blue Star brite Star Tron Gasoline Additive ... do so mostly out of a strong sense of paranoia.... I also use Seafoam

for now i can still get 87 octane E0 gas. So luckily, I don't have to deal with ethanol

For me unless i'm out i put a little Seafoam into every tank----boat-car-truck-tractor-ATV

Fuel and TCW-3 oil is all my 17 year old twins need.

I use SF. I know it works. Learned about it on here, tried it and never without it.

i have never added anything but oil...been boating for over 30 years, and still go everyweek....have never put anything in my cars or trucks either

As you can see from the responses, some people believe they need to use something in every tank and others never use anything and the results are the same, most people have no problems. What it means is either way works, so I typically use nothing, it's much cheaper.
