I accidentally left cans of Pepsi and Diet Coke on board my boat before storing it for the winter. The cans exploded from the contstant freeze and thaw. They were stored under a bench seat inside the cabin of my cruiser. The storage area is covered in carpet that is glued to the hull. What is the best method of soaking up the mess in order to avoid mold and the musty smell that I anticipate will ocurr in the warmer weather?

I would use a shop vac and plenty of water.

I have a (cheep-o) home carpet cleaner with an upholstery attachment hose. Awkward to lift into the boat but I use it every summer on it.

Short of that I'd soap/water/scrub brush the area and then shop vac. it up (keep doing till clean, then rinse with water and vac. again).

I have a small carpet cleaner called "The Little Green Machine" made by Bissel, I think. It works great for that kind of stuff. Has 2 small tanks, one for soapy water and another for waste. I use it mostly for spills in the cars (I have 2 small children) but it works great anywhere. They make a heated one that I haven't found any better than the non-heated. I want to say it was around $79 at local stores.
