Re: Social Security

i hope they fix it. maybe it's the younger generation coming out, but i don't worry about it and hope i never do. i treat it as another tax i pay, no big deal. if it get something back, great. but i believe it needs to work. if we don't have ss, i can't imagine how much it will cost me in taxes supporting all the fools that end up old and very poor. at least ss provides them something.

talk about crazy- if i retire at age 42, i start receiving 40% of my base salary that very day. that amount rises with inflation and does not stop until i die. and i never pay a dime into it! i personally feel i deserve it, but understand when others have a problem with it.

Re: Social Security

after some research I found some interesting facts
out... some years back, greenspan told congress
they needed to raise the SS payments so that we
are actually paying ahead rather than paying as
we go as was always done. so we the people have
been paying MORE than is required to cover the
current SS payroll.
where is all this extra money you ask???
spent... used to cover the current tax cuts.
is this legal?
here's an old article from 1982:
http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/1997/05/26/back.time/index.html

Re: Social Security

SS was only intended to be a safety net. I don't expect to get anything out of it, and I hate paying it in! I could do much better with saving for retirement if I had the money to do with as I pleased!

Until we are given control of the money we pay in, it is only another of the many taxes we get to pay to live in such a great country.

Of course, why do we have so many social programs that run our tax dollars so high? Because we, as a nation, have forgotten how to care for others. Let the Government do it! Where are the churches that will take care of the homeless and the poor? Where are the families that will take care of their elderly and disabled? Where are the neighbors that will look out for each other?

If we would be more socially responsible, as a whole, then we wouldn't need all the taxes. So, do we cut taxes and programs to "force" people to start doing what they should have been doing all along, or do we wait till they are doing it before the cuts?

Hey, as long as the gov is paying, why should I?

Re: Social Security

Off the cuff, I beleive all Federal employees pay into their own retirement program.
The Social Security program is whats left for the serfs.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

GW ran on a platform of modifying SS with personal savings accounts. This was a major consideration to me.
What I got was bigger government. And a very expensive, politically loaded, unwanted, and a haphazard perscription drug benefit(?)instead.

Re: Social Security

To the best of my knowledge the SS fund has never paid out more than it takes in.
If the funds that have been borrowed, used, stolen from the SS trust fund were put back there would be no problem.
Cutting benefits is not the answer!
Put back the stolen money and eliminate the pay out for higher income and you will have alot more money to play with.
Social Security in needed espescially for the poor people who just get by. They cannot afford to save for retirement.
We have alot of poor people now with GWB in office.
