:) Dear boat owners/users, I am doing research on the development of markets of solar (PV – photovoltaic) based boats. I would appreciate very much to know your opinion
on use of electricity from PV cells on boat. This is a link to the questionnaire: http://www.questionpro.com/akira/TakeSurvey?id=459150
Thank you very much in advance for your interest! You might be interested to have a look at the ‘Shot overview on possible use of PVs in boats’ before answering questions. Check it at http://sunergy.thrijswijk.nl/solarboat/. I will publish the results form this survey at this page.

I looked at your survey. This is for sail boat operators? ...because the word "sail" suddenly appears half way through the survey.

Are you maybe using the wrong English term to describe general boat use? Over here people "sail" with sailboats.

The survey turn into some sailing junk. I gave up.

Boats use massive amounts of energy. (even small ones) Solar panels provide miniscule amounts of energy per square foot. See the problem?

A few years ago we looked at marketing an AM/FM radio for paddle boats powered by Solar Cells. The Cells didn't put in enough of a charge to power the radio for more than 3 hours, though the cells charged an avg of 15 hours a day. To get the charge we needed it required large cells that greatly exceeded the cost of the radio and were too cumbersome for a paddle boat.

There are some new solar technologies being developed currently that produce more energy than the old silicon cells of years past. There is a company called Open Energy that is developing a more efficient Photo-voltaic system. It is being intergrated into roofing materials as well as very thin films. There are also collectors that intensify the suns rays which in turn, heat water to produce steam for turbines. I think this all out of the reach for boat propulsion right now, but I am sure it may not be too far reaching for the future.
