My son is at Fort Hood, preparing to ship out to Iraq in January.

If his mom and I pay a surprise visit over Christmas, where a good place to crash for a couple of nights? Budget is tight.

may be harder to do as a surprise but they should have visitors quarters on base. basically a motel for families. I used the one at Fort Bragg for my folks when they came to visit.
you may be able to work something out with the quarters personel to get a stay there and prove he's there after you surprise him. worth a shot.

My many experiences had Active TDY, Reservists, and Contractors having priority leaving very few openings for family who are not active or reserve, but still worth a shot. There is a link on the webpage I posted above for that too!

I consider this......... in all of my years most installations become quiet and dead since everyone is leaving for the holidays. Most of the tdy/contractors etc should be gone during that period.............. and everyone should be woring a holiday schedule

My brother was there last Christmas, they had SNOW!!!

Just a little but he enjoyed it.
Try the other ideas but I will ask him for suggestions if they don't pan out.

Google Fort Hood, click on visiters centers, lots of info and Phone. I would also call unit commander/First Sergeant for info. I think you will find them very helpful. Some will allow use of quarters on base.

A few year?s back when my son was stationed at Fort Hood I stayed at the Econo Lodge. It?s 2 miles from the main gate, was clean but with just the basics for comfort. No fridge, coffee maker etc. There are places to eat within walking distance if needed. They had single and double rooms.
I flew in and out of Dallas and that?s about a 2hr drive. Also flew into Waco once and that?s about 1.5hr drive.
Wish your son well and tell him to keep his head down. We are proud of our solders.

Contact the housing authority on base to see if they can help you out, when I was serving we often got contacted by families that wanted to visit loved ones before they deployed and often times we were able to accommodate them on base and if not, were able to get them quarters close to the base for a very reasonable/cheap rate.

When I served(26 years) I knew one of the best moral builders was a visit from loved ones.

I know for a fact after my many years, this is not only important but is appreciated by the commanders in charge as well as the loved one you will visit, nice, and I commend you...

I had to spill the beans. Turns out he was going off base for 4 days, so I might have had a hard time finding him.

He's lined up a cheep motel for the first night, then we can probably get into a lake cabin right on base, which exactly matches our normal MO.

Front brakes just went to crap on the car, so I have to look into that before we leave.

Cheap pad slap, and the brakes are fixed. Need a fresh guide pin that I'll pick up and throw in Sunday. One got twisted a little and binds. When I replace a bald tire on Monday the car should be good to go.

Kid's got a motel room for us first night. Probably will spend a couple of days in lake cabins on base. Maybe even rent a boat. If the bass boat wasn't tucked away so tight for the winter, I'd be tempted to use the conversion van and tow it down there. That, however, would be a budget buster at this time, just in fuel.
