ok so my boat is started yesterday after a while of just listening to it click a few times now it wont start at all. all it does is click at the solenoid when starting. is my solenoid bad? is there a way to test that? its a 78 evinrude 70hp 3cyclinder if that helps.

Possible bad solenoid. Check your battery first make sure it is fully charged. Spin the flywheel on top of the motor to see that the motor isn't seized and the pistons are moving. If both of the above are good put direct power to your starter and if it engages I would probably go with the solenoid.

Solenoid is probably good, Matt.

Go to Engine FAQs and "Outboard won't start". Troubleshooting procedure there.

My money is on corrosion where the ground cable bolts to the steel bypass cover.

Many good solenoids, batteries, and starters have been replaced for the lack of good contact cleaning. Don't just visually inspect them. Remove and clean. Use sandpaper, wire brush, etc. And that would be ALL connections from the battery to the starter, including any ground.

dirty connections are 80% of starting problems. remove and clean battery cable engine and battery end. also check the cables for knicks, and swelling, they get knicked and corrode from the inside out. again typing at the same time

if you feel it needs to be rebuilt, take it to a auto starter rebuilder. you'll come out cheaper, than a marina. some time the brushes just get stuck and need a little persuasion.

i dunno whats wrong with it now thats its warming up outside it turns over everytime. i dunno if the starter is going bad or i just have a bad connection somewhere but its hard to know when its currently working but it'll probably be like last time where it was working great until i put it in the water and then it wont even run

Check voltage at the positive coming out of the solenoid , you should have around 12.5v every time. Unscrew the positive from the starter, clip a voltmeter to it and to the engine block, you'll need a helper to move the key to the start position, take the reading.
