Hello All, Hope you can help. I have a 1980 Merc 50 hp ob. I have a new battery and new battery cables on it. I am having problems starting it. When I turn the key, the solenoid clicks, but the starter does not fire up. Furthermore, If I jump the solenoid, the starter does fire up, and I can get the motor running. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,Barry

Re: Solenoid problem???

If the solenoid clicks when attempting to start, and the starter works when bypassing the solenoid....replace the solenoid.

Yeah schematic is correct. If you jump the solenoid and it cranks get a new one.

Re: Solenoid problem???

Thanks everyone,

I ran a few tests on the solenoid, and I was only getting 2 volts to the starter when trying to crank. Removing the solenoid and resistance testing it with power to the leads from the key showed a couple thousand ohms (instead of zero which it should be). The culprit certainly does look like the solenoid. I'm going to replace it. Let you know how it turns out. THANKS AGAIN!!!
