I have a 78 evinrude model 35853R my problem is it wont start, the cover of the solenoid is split in two and the spring can off because either the cotter pin broke or the other pin broke so the plunger isn't moving at all. I was wondering if anyone new how the plunger/spring connects and how the solenoid works witht he electric start. Also I was wondering if i could get away with just setting the plunger at certain depth and just leave there. I do not know what to do. Any help would rock! Thanks.

here is a link to the diagram http://shop2.evinrude.com/Index.aspx?s1=364cdc24ff93de5a1ac20d06e62dea23&catalog_id=0&siteid=1 , I have item 39, 38 and I couldn't find inside the motor case.

are talking about the startr solenoid or the choke solenoid??

i assume choke.. so do not hold it open permantly.. the choke solenoid injects gas to the heads for cold starting..when you turn the key, and push in the solenoid squirts.. if your is broken and letting feul pass then your engine floods..

if you meany starter solenoid..then get a new one..there cheap enough

Re: Solenoid problem

I think its the choke solenoid since it is on the same diagram as the carb but I'm still not sure. I pulled the spark plugs out to let any gas evaporate if I was flooding it. I was going to take a pic and post it but I can't find my cam.... I think the GF has with her. I am going to try and track her down and get a pic and post it.

what I don't have is item 37, 53, 51, 55, and 49 at the bottom of the image. I am still trying to find my camera to a pic but I hope this helps with the more info.

Re: Solenoid problem

that looks like a manul primer solenoid.. it attaches to the cab bowl.. so if i am correct you push the primmer a few times to fill the bowl before starting??..

im not 100% sure if there is potential that it could add feul to bog you down or flood...but i am sure that if it doesnt seat right you can pull air in and mess up the feul flowing into the carb causing you to stall...so in the end it acts as an air leak in the feul sysytem..

i'm not sure who carries the parts for that but i'm thinking ebay or at least a google search could help in getting them located...last option is to think about a new one..i think they are around 70 bucks...
