Solenoid replacement ???

Can I replace the solenoid in my 1961 Johnson 40hp model rds-23 with an automotive one? (cuz I happen to have one).

If you want to, you may have to ground it to get it to work and it isn't "marine" sealed but it will work, I have one on my 90hp and it has worked 3 years in a row thusfar.

Well, tell ya what...if you do, it will instantly destroy the starter safety switch the first time you attempt to start it. Now, you have two problems to toubleshoot instead of one. The car solenoids look identical, but are different inside.

If you are smart enough to rewire it, yes it will work, without the safety switch function. But if you know how to do that, you wouldn't have to ask the question.

F_R is correct, I had a mind slip thinking that maybe your 40 didn't have the switch as so many don't (probably why I didn't remember it) , my 90 sure doesn't. On the auto solenoids that other terminal will actually put out around 8 volts and fry the switch, NAPA or Iboats sells the equivalent Sierra 18-5807 Solenoid.

I have a good used one from a Johnson 1968 55HP.Don't have the motor any longer.
Unless it won't work....someone will chime in I'm sure, if it won't, you are welcome to it.

Ok...here is what I got from a Tech on using car regulators..I was always in the yes you can group..but I was told they have a oil in the marine ones....to prevent them from burning up and catching fire....hence a bilge explosion....

same with starters..they should be sealed before assembly to prevent fumes in the starter...

makes sense to me....spark and fumes...BooM
