Re: Solo Boating

Hi,

From reading your post I get the feeling that your main concern is having difficulty at your launch ramp?

It's really no big deal to launch and retrieve solo; especially with a boat like yours. I do it all the time. Of course; each launch facility is different; but here's what I do.

Before I get to the ramp I stop and prepare everything ahead of time. After backing down to the water's edge; I take my long bow rope and tie tie to the dock someplace. Then after launching, if the boat tries to drift away in the wind before I can get to it, I always have the rope to pull it back. It's really easy; I've never had a problem.

Even when I boat with family or friends, the job of handling the launch and retrieve is mine alone anyway. It really doesn't take more than one person.

Now; safety on the water is another thing. If I had medical issues of the sort that I felt might come on me with no warning; then I would not go solo. Just like I wouldn't want to drive the car solo if that was the case.

Give us some more background as to your over-all situation and the answer might be different. But; from what I read here from you...I'd say go for it.

Maybe not on a busy weekend for your first try. Pick a day and time when the ramp is quiet(er).

Have fun,

Chuck

Well, did u go solo? If you did, hope it went well. If you haven't, it isn't that hard after you get over the "first time" nerves. I go solo about 50% of the time and it's old hat now. Just plan, prepare, take your time and enjoy!

Re: Solo Boating

No I haven't gone solo boating yet. My wife and kids leave next week wed.

I have bigger problems now.

I mentioned to my wife today that I want to go boating while they are gone. She had this big concerned look on her face. She is afraid I might get hurt or something being by myself. I don't want to worry her. What a person shall do?

Thanks for all your kind replies.

Even when I have people with me I usually launch & retrieve solo unless it's someone who is familar with boating. My son helps when he is with me but he's the only one unless you count the people laughing as I back into the water.

If your wife is concerned with your being alone find a cute young girl to help you! All of a sudden you being alone will become a good idea!

Ever hear the saying "It's easier to gain forgiveness than permission"? I guess it's too late for that now since you already told her.

I go out by myself quite often and find it easy. Sometimes now other people just interupt my routine. One thing I do is tie the boat to the winch post with a fairly long line before backing down the ramp. That way when I push it off after taking the winch and safety hook off I still have a line to grap onto if it starts to go out before I get in. I have had to pull it back into me a couple times with that rope. I always drive to the courtesy dock and then come back and get the truck.

Re: Solo Boating

i've been doing it for a while now, but it's much easier when your boat is only 14' and about 3-400lbs total. Even without a dock.

Got a 16' now that weights a total of about 1300 lbs. This should be a little more interesting.... :(
Weight shouldn't be a concern, my boat is 5K plus loaded and I routinely launch and retrieve solo.
