My 1977 70hp Evinrude would not accelarate when the throttle was advanced.

It turns out that the spring that advances the distributor was weak leading to the engine coughing and quiting on trying to accelerate.

It went to 3 different mechanics before I found the problem. Carbs were rebuilt, syncronization "tricks" used, etc., - but the basic problem was the timing was not advancing due to this spring.

It seems this accelaration hesitation is a common problem on this forum. At least for this outboard, and other similar designs, one should check to make sure the timing advances properly.
