Solution for Hesitation (1977 70hp Johnson/Evinrude)

My 1977 70hp Evinrude would not accelarate when the throttle was advanced. <br /><br />It turns out that the spring that advances the distributor was weak leading to the engine coughing and quiting on trying to accelerate. <br /><br />It went to 3 different mechanics before I found the problem. Carbs were rebuilt, syncronization "tricks" used, etc., - but the basic problem was the timing was not advancing due to this spring.<br /><br />It seems this accelaration hesitation is a common problem on this forum. At least for this outboard, and other similar designs, one should check to make sure the timing advances properly.

Max4..... In all probability, it is not the spring, if you're speaking of the large coil type spring that is incorporated within the vertical throttle handle.<br /><br />The timer base should turn/move very freely. If dirt has collected due to someone applying grease to the nylon bearing, or dirt collecting for any reason on any bearing surface of the timer base, it will stick to a point whereas the lower portion of the throttle lever will advance but the sticking timer base will cause the upper portion of the throttle lever to stick also.<br /><br />The timer base can also be caused to stick/jam due to even one of the four (4) retaining clamps being slightly too tight (it happens).<br /><br />The proper cure is to remove the flywheel, stator, and timer base, then clean all components thoroughly, grease the brass inner liner slightly, then apply only a slight bit of oil (OIL) to the slot which retains the nylon bearing.<br /><br />With everything disconnected from the timer base, it should move freely if pressure was applied to it with a weak toothpick.

Joe - you were absolutely correct. Cleaning the bearing did the trick perfectly. <br /><br />THANKS!<br /><br />I do think checking this should be a standard step in solving a hesitation issue.
