After a lot of research i found a very cheap alternative to the $90 to $200 replacement timing cover. Come to find out, the 3.0L GM block is the same as the 2.5L block. Most of the differences is in the internal parts, but a majority of the external parts are interchangable.

If you go to any auto parts store and order Dorman's Part No. 635-506, you will pay around $15. The kit includes the gasket and seal. Saving you at least $75.

Please get the word out so other boaters don't pay and arm and a leg.

That is a different engine that the 2.5l that was put in a boat. The one that merc used is the 153cu engine. That part is for the 151cu engine. The only car the the 2.5l/153cu engine was used in was in the early 60's for a couple years.

Could always grab the front cover for the 196 /230 cubic inch 6 cylinder, or go to a GM dealer that sells industrial engines and get the timing cover for the 3.0 much cheaper than through mercruiser or volvo

I know the engines are not the same... but out of curiosity I googled the Dorman part number the original poster mentions. Here's the pic. It does look the same.
