hey guys just bought me a timing light. want to time my engin to the fullest. today i took a mechanic to check the timing on my 470, when he point the light to the damper it was 13 or 14 deg i told him it sopose to be 8 deg or i think 4 deg he tried to advance it to 8 deg but it could not. he said he has to pull the distributor and take of the valve cover to bring number one cilinder to dead center. my????is does he realy have to take off the valve cover to do that??

if it sopose to be set at 4 deg how much the points must be set at.

thanks ,. can some give me some step by step in doing this.

thanks again

Find another mechanic. You can find top dead center by looking at the front pulley. If the timing marks line up at zero it has to be top dead center either on comp stroke or exh stroke. You can tell the diff by looking at the dist rotor postiion in relation to the #1 plug wire.

Hold it.Your crank pulley(dampener) could be bad.Is it an elasto type pulley?(Is it a 2 piece with a rubber strap between them)? These go bad after time and the rubber dry rots causing the outer ring to slip.Giving you a false timing reading. You might have to pull valve cover for this reason to check the valve position.

bolo...

A bad thermostat can cause water hoses to blow.
They get stuck SHUT, causing no circulation thus the heat and pressure backs up till it goes caPUSH!

Check the riser gasket its sounds like your presureizing the coolant system. There are three different gaskets for the 224 inch engine. This engine doesnt have a two piece pulley on the crank shaft. Mercruiser call it a pulley and not a harmonic balancer. If your blowing out the coolant and not over heating the engine Its a pressure problem. Riser gasket or head gasket. Exhaust pressure in the coolant system.

ok it seems we are getting close to solve this problem. first the risers only have three bolts instead of four one broke off in the manifold around the outer part of the risers it has leaky rust but i dont see any leak while the engine is running. finally how can i install a heat guage in the engine compartment so i can sure i am not over heating because i thing the guage on the pannel is not working right.

Re: some one help me time my 470 please

hello
double check the water volume from the seawater pump to the heat excahnger. then check the volume from the hose from the heat excanger. the 2 should be close. if your riser is clogged it will cause the coolant to over heat as wellyou may try inspecting the heat excahnger for debris. if you have the cast iron manifold and its not craked I may know where a cheap riser is. otherwise if all the engine mechanical stuff checks out check the seawater side. all the water in has to go out as well and the flat riser liked to clog on that engine. good luck and keep posting

Re: some one help me time my 470 please

Try a different sparkplug to see if it will spark. You can temporarily try one of the plugs you know is okay. If it still doesn't spark then check your sparkplug wire. You can use another sparkplug wire in place of the wire where you don't have any spark. Make a drawing between the distributor and the block so you don't mix up the position of the spark plug wires. Also look inside the distributor cap to see if there are any cracks, damage or corrosion inside the cap. Let us know what you find out.

Re: some one help me time my 470 please

rattana i did all that you mention but still no sparks. if i rev it to say 3000 rpm it fall back down like a stone without me shifting the stick back to nutral.
