Sounds like you may have a restriction in the fuel line, a partially blocked fuel filter maybe. Seems like you have a lot on unconnected problems with the engine did it run OK before you took it to the mechanic - you started the thread seeking advice on how to use a timing light seems to me thats the least of your problems

bolo789:

Ok man I am going to throw a wild idea out..
Take it back to the SOB and let him fix it..
why are you even messing with this? If it was just rebuilt I would assume there is some sort of warranty and it sounds like the guy did a number on ya....

Tallman

Your backfiring and bogging down sounds very much like a lean condition. If you're sure the carb is OK then check the fuel pump and filter. A carb kit is only about $50 and if you can troubleshoot your ignition the carb should be easy enough for you.

Check the shift interrupter switch. If the shift cable is not adjusted correctly or sticking it will kill the spark when you accelerate. You need to watch it as someone drives the boat.

Check the valve clearance. If the valves were removed, seats ground, valves refaced, and the push rods not installed in the same position. The clearance should be checked. There is no screw adjustments for this, the push rods are different lengths.

Hello
If it will run ok if you open the throttle slowly but lean out and pop when opened quickly you need to check the float level and the accelerator pump and carb passages. sounds like a leanout on hard acceleration.
good luck and keep posting

ok guys. the backfire has stop this is what i did . i bought a feeler guage for points, i took of the distributor cap off the port engine that has no problem. check the points setting with the feeler match the feel to the problem engine the problem engin points was set too tight i could hardly slide the guage through it. i made the adjust and from i turn the keys the sound i got from the engine i knew i fix the backfireing. rev it in nutral no backfire, took her out for a ride, man she runs great get on plane in no time. so my only problem i has right now is that high back pressure. and i realy need help on this. even after a run when i go back the next day and open the radiator cap a lot of air gush out when i open the other engine no air build up.

so my next prob is high back pressure.

classic head gasket symptom. you don't want to let this go too long... the exhaust can cut a groove in the head (bad) or block (worse) that has to be machined out to get a new gasket to seal.
