Some people just value their boats too much

Well, as some of you know I am looking for 16 Starcraft aluminum boat. So I have found one that was listed on the local site and called the guy (there was no picture). From the first words you could tell that he was hammered beyond believe - he refered to himself as "Johnny" and could hardly put words together. So I have asked him about the boat (it was listed for 900 for motor, boat and trailer). After listening to him for 25(!!!) minutes on how great this boat was, how floors were solid and motor and running perfectly I decided to stop by next day. We came there in pouring rain and boat was sitting outside, so we decided to quietly take a look and disappear, if we did not like it.

Well, needles to say that the boat was one of the worst POS i have every seen. He used it as the dump for all household items, had 5-6 coats of flaking paint, transom in the powder form factor and motor that was so dirty that you could not tell a make of it. Best of all it was sitting on the trailer that was true home-made. It was literally from-home-made - it was made from the old steel piping from the water supply lines. Whoever did this work of art did not even bother cutting the T's from the ends of the pipes. Some pipes were not cut but bend-broken. I really wish i had a camera with me that day.

Anyways, we did a startegical mistake and stayed there long enough for the owner to see us. We went running to us from the house barefoot and in colourful drawers. Again completely drunk. I told him that we are not really interested. That was another mistake, becuase then we were forced to keep standing on the street under the rain listening on what king of "steal" he has there. Here is the list (my comments are in brackets):
1) Windshield alone is worth 500 dollars (several cracks in it)
2) Projector light he put in last year for 300 dollars (light was probably older than boat and in worse shape than trailer)
3) Seats (all in rips and rust) were 300 each and it had 4 of them (technically 3.5). So 1200 there alone.
4) Trailer is worth over a 1000 dollars (as an artwork?)
5) Hull is worth 1500 in aluminum (maybe 300, if it is "pure aluminum")
6) Motor is worth 3500 at least (he refused to start it)
7) Tires - 100 each (all flat and chewed up)
8) Cover - he paid 400 dollars for it last year (i guess cover was sick with some kind of express-aging-desease, cause it looked like it was 25 years old, all in holes and paint)

There were another things like 100's of dollars in screws (golden?) etc, etc. At the end I think it was a 10000+ dollar boat in parts that he was giving away for only 900 (i think i started believeing that, or maybe it was the booze smell taht got me drunk). I carefully asked him why he does not sell it separatelly and got an answer that it is too much hassle and he is a busy man preparing his racing car for the next race (here my imagination went wild and i was hardly keeping myself from laughing). My wife on another hand was not laughing cause she got a hug from that guy and now all her cloth smelled like booze and smoke. So i had to tell him about 5 times that we are in the rush and we will think about it before we got in the truck. Even then he was running beside and shouting that if we do not act quickly he has a lineup of people making offers.

Go figure.....

What people "pay" for things is rarely an indicator of their worth.

I tend to shy away from people that tell me how much they paid for things.

When he was explaining how to get there he said that he is besides Beer Store..... that answered a lot of my questions.

That's bloody funny, we are headed to Innisfil this weekend to look at houses (trying to get on the lake). Definately gonna do a drive by on this one. Thanx for the PM!

It's odd, I found the Innisfil side of the lake to be much nicer...maybe I'll go back to looking for a house near Jacksons Point..

You know what, I've traveled all over north america, man, you get the same trash no matter where. The only thing I've really noticed is that the US slums make the Canadian slums look like paradise. Thems some tough areas. New Orleans comes to mind, the area around the french quarter.
