Last week I'd received the new title for my boat but the registration wasn't included which I thought was odd.

Then yesterday I received the registration and included with it was a nice little booklet. "the HANDBOOK of Wisconsin Boating Laws and Responsibilities". Have never seen one before nor had there ever been on included with the registration.

It's pretty nicely done. 33 pages and goes from "the LAW" to "Boating Basics". Under the LAW there are 5 short chapters, Before Going Out, Required Equipment, On the Water, Specifically for PWC's and Specifically for Skiing. Under BASICS it has, Before Going Out, On the Water, Sunrise and Sunset and Required Equipment Checklist.

Quite interesting reading I will say and am glad our DNR included it.

Its nice when the DNR includes things like that. As much as I hate to admit it after seeing some of the stupidity I think they need to make reading it a mandatory 8 hour class. I need a class to hunt, I need a class to drive a car but I don't need a class to operate a boat that weighs less than 50 tonnes.

One of the items I find interesting and have commented about before.

Registering Your Vessel. Exceptions to the requirement, "Vessels registered in another state and using Wisconsin waters for less than 60 consecutive days".

So by this I read it that boats registered in another state yet permanently moored or kept in Wisconsin should be registered in Wisconsin even if the owner is from out of state! And I do see a lot of that going on in my area.

Michigan has had booklets like that for last 15 years at least. Good stuff to have/know.

Yeah. I like it, great idea. Maybe it will help cut down on some the craziness that goes on out there. Though I think very few people will ever read it. Too many Know-it-alls out there some times.

They have been ripping you off bonz_d.

I've been getting those for years, many many years. Not with renewals stickers, but every time I register a "new to me" boat.

x2 - we got the boat version when we registered the pontoon and jetski and they send out the sled version the first time you register a new snowmobile.

You can also just download them. We did that when the kids got their boating certs since they are required to have them in WI, but not in MN.

At this point I didn't even know they had this publication out there to be had. I will keep it handy though.

Strange. I would assume that there would be a pile of them on the counter at the place you register your boat, that is the way it is in MN. Never gone in person to WI, always just mail them in.

I wish I lived where you do! Here in my state, we have to take and pass a test to drive a car, take a hunter's "safety" course and pass a test to get a license to hunt, and a boating course if you're younger than some particular age in order to operate a boat. However, I commonly see people driving cars and acting like complete idiots, hunters shooting high-powered rifles in various dangerous situations, and guys driving 55mph+ bass rigs like they and the people near them were invincible. Sadly, requiring licenses in my area just makes boating more expensive and a hassle---doesn't seem to make folks more responsible---at least in my area.

I'm not sure where in WI you are, but up in Green Bay the police have been stopping 98% of the boat traffic on the water on a daily basis. That seems to go a lot farther than the booklet the DNR mails out, even though it's getting to the point where it's boarder-line harassment.

The WI "license" is just an online course and test. Required for anyone born after 1/1/1990 (My oldest was born in 90 so all 3 kids need one to operate in WI)
