so i pulled the boat from storage today to clean er up and start her up. Did my yearly maintenance today, pulled the drive off and found about 1/4" of water in the u-joint bellow. the water was not oily, and the u-joints looked brand new.

So i'm going to replace the bellows now, but w/o my seloc (which is at the ex's house, not worth going back for lol) i'm a little in the dark.

Could someone please post the link to the service manual for my drive. It's a 79 pre-alpha off a 165 merc. serial # 5162682.

Also, stupid me, i forgot to place the shifter in forward before i took the drive off. do i just have to put the trottle in forward and put the drive in forward gear to put it back on?

Thanks
Stephen

That is exactly why drives are pulled during winterization, to check for water in the bellows so it doesn't sit in there freeze, rust, get in gimbal bearings etc. Be sure to check the gimbal bearing & ujoints. Also check drive oil, it probably has water in it because the input shaft seal is not designed to keep water out.

Here is a link to the Mercruiser service manual, better than that Seluck anyway.

http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/6/6covr3.pdf

Yes, if you didn't bend the shift shafts all out of shape, If they are bent, you will need to replace them or the shifting will bind and usually cause the engine to die.

no the shafts arent' bent. i checked the gear oil already and it's clean. i even replaced it again to make sure. the u-joints still turn freely with no resistance, grinding, vibrations etc. the gimble bearing also turns freely, but i'm going to replace it anyways.
