Re: Sorry but another VRO questions

Well I did some more searching and found that when I disconnect the bullet connector conecting the oil tank wire to the tan wire everything works fine. The alarm beeps for a second when you turn the key and then I can start the motor. Any ideas what the problem is or how to fix it? Thanks again.

Re: Sorry but another VRO questions

There is a short in the wires to/from the oil tank, or there is a problem with the oil tank float.

- Inspect all the wires for damage, pinching, obvious splices with wads of electric tape, etc. Repair any damage and re-test.

- Remove the 4 screws on top of the oil tank where the oil lines and wires are connected. Pull out the float mechanism and inspect that the contacts are not stuck. The float has a brass strip across it that makes contact with two brass contacts on the sides. The contacts are connected to the wires. This design varies slightly between older and newer model tanks, but they all pretty much work the same. Simple mechanical float makes contact when the level is low.

Re: Sorry but another VRO questions

After I got the float out again and went through it it seemed to be working correctly. Nothing was hung. I decided to then unscrew teh screws holding the cover to the electrical components in the switch. I noticed there was some burn marks on the board in there, and I think that is the problem. I found a good used tank on the internet and I will try to install the float off of it and see hwo that goes. If everything works out I might go ahead and hang the motor on my center console and give it a test run. Of course I got another question. Being as I know the cylinders a lightly scarred, and the compression is low is it a good idea to run this motor the rest of this summer or should I go ahead and tear it apart to bore the cylinders? Just a thought. Thanks again for the help.

Good find with the burned board. Be sure to clean the replacement tank and get a new sock filter. They are only $7 or so at the local marina.

As far as running it goes, that is up to you. The compression seems OK, but if you see obvious gouging/galling of the cylinder wall, I would not use it. Slight skuffing can often be cleaned up with some 400 grit emery paper wet with motor oil. The compression may actually go up a bit after an hours run time. But that is entirely your decision.

Re: Sorry but another VRO questions

I just wanted to tell everyone thanks for their help. As of right now the new/used tank and oil float sensor I got seem to fix the problem. I am going to try to hang the motor off the back of my boat this weekend so I can test run the motor on Sunday. If all goes well and she runs good I am going to run it till the end of summer and then plan a rebuild. Not a complete rebuild but mainly pulling the cylinders to get them bored, chamfered, and honed. That should make this baby run like new. Again thanks.
