sourcing boat windshield

Hi all,

A buddy of mine has a '06 Rinker Captiva 192 that took some damage during a windstorm. A shelter fell and smashed the center walk-thru window to the bow seats, as well as a curved section on the starboard side (pics below).

He was quoted the usual ridiculous price to replace it (like $12,000) by a local marina, which is probably more than the boat is worth. I'm trying to help him figure out a solution so he can get back on the water. The frame is damaged as well as the glass itself.

We live in an area with insufficient boating for there to be salvage yards where he might find one to scavenge. I'm wondering if there is any value in contacting a windshield maker (I think Taylormade is one I've seen mentioned here), but I'm wondering if there are other options. Since the frame is bashed up, too, would that likely be something a windshield manufacturer would sell, or were those sourced separately?

Any ideas for how to get this windshield repaired without requiring him to take out a second mortgage would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim

nearly all windshields are made by Taylor made

and yes, the local marina is most likely taking the TMS price and multiplying by 2, then adding their labor.

realistically, insurance should cover it. and they may scrap the boat as the cost of repair is higher than the value of the boat.

your looking at about $4k from TMS for a windshield assembly. you may be able to get a better price from rinker or from Great Lakes Skipper

it looks like your buddy finds the dock with the bow at times coming in a bit hot...... the bow rail is smashed in and there is a fair amount of spider cracking in the fiberglass.

Not sure if that’s from docking or when the shelter caught the wind. It was one of those metal-roofed, open-sided shelters that was improperly anchored. It was picked up by 60-70 mph winds and thrashed the boat pretty thoroughly.
