Re: Space Shuttle Explosion

I heard a pair of sonic booms at about 8: CST. I went out and saw major vapor trails of something breaking up. It came down SE of here, which is about 80 miles west of Dallas. I have no way to estimate how far away it was.

This is a spooky coincidence. When the Challenger blew up I was in the parking lot of Total Technical Institute in Ft. Lauderdale with my students to watch the launch. We were 200 miles away but it was easy to see the whole event.

Based on that, Columbia could have been at least that far away.

A tragic event. It saddens me to think that I saw both shuttles die. I wonder how many people eyewitnessed both tragedies. :(

I think CNN said it broke up 200,000 feet up. My heart goes out to the families and NASA.

Re: Space Shuttle Explosion

I know there is a lot of safety procedures and devices meant to ensure a safe landing of the crew at least but after seeing the video I can't imagine any of them being able to come into play before things got too hairy to make it out. I am hoping for the best but expect the worst.
I have to say this the space industry although having had it's problems and potentially being the most hazardous of all flight industries has the best track record.

Re: Space Shuttle Explosion

Hearing the news reports on tv from a Dallas tv station who had the shuttle on camera I went out side to look since I am only about 100 miles from Dallas.
There it was screaming across the sky.I had my 7 yr old daughter outside with me. She didnt understand what she was seeing. She said they had talked about it at school and she couldnt wait to go to school monday to tell her teacher that she saw the shuttle go buy on its way to landing in Florida.
I had to explain to her what was happening.

Definately a sad day for America :( .

The local Tv stations have announced a falling debris alert.
We are being advised to watch for falling debris in our area and not to come in contact with any debris found. They have given us a hot line number If we find or see anything in our area.

Havent heard of anything being found yet.

Re: Space Shuttle Explosion

We treat these shuttle flights as pretty routine, but to think of what that piece of equipment goes through coming out of orbit and penetrating the atmosphere at incredible speeds, temperatures, and pressures, it sure doesn't take much to go wrong before it is catastrophic.
Think of all the benefits of space technology and the like that would not be possible without NASA and some of these brave souls...I'm watching the coverage of it on my direct TV satellite receiver as I type, for example...

Not much else to say except my thoughts go to their respective families...

John

It seems I'm always at the shop when tragedy occurs. I was at the shop when the Challenger exploded, during 9/11 and now this. I don't think words can express what we are all feeling right now. I'll let it go at that.

Request each of us, if you haven't already, put the families of the shuttle crew in your thoughts and prayers.
