spaghetti seal (SP??)

I've been rebuilding a 90hp Force for my entertainment... Bought a gasket kit which includes a new red rubber cord seal for the lower unit right??? So I dropped the lower unit to check out the water pump and it was sealed with permatex between the halves - no groove for this seal. Is this just intended to lay in there and bolt it up or should I go with the permatex again. Any help would be appreciated.

What year motor?
How big (long) is this seal?
One piece driveshaft or 2 piece?
Generic gasket/seal kit or one from Mercury?

This is a 1990 motor with a one piece drive shaft. The seal is probably 30" approx. And the seal kit was generic. I am thinking permatex is the way to go...

Re: spaghetti seal (SP??)

You are talking about between the lower unit and the midsection of the motor, correct?

You shouldn't need any seal or permatex there on that motor.
The lower unit is sealed, and there is no reason to seal the midsection.

In my opinion, generic gasket kit with extra parts for different motors.
But if a bead of permatex makes you feel better, go for it.
