Bear with me - I'm working from memory here.
On the side of this engine on the emmissions label, it says that the spark plug should be a QL86C. So do a couple of online references. The dealer has installed QL78YC.
Has there been an update, or is this an option plug, or is it just a mistake?

Paul is that a 4 stroke you are talking about.

if that is a typo on the QL78YC and it might read QL87YC That plug goes in a 2.0 or 2.3 h/p of the same year.

What is your model number on the motor? They did not make a 6hp 2 stroke in 2000. The 4-stroke 6hp takes a smaller threaded plug.

Bubbakat - Sorry, I had that information in the title, but I should have repeated it in the body as well. We're talking about a 2000 Johnson 6hp 2-stroke outboard here.

She's definetly a 2-stroke. Mabey they just sold them up here in Canada then?
Unfortuenetly, the engine isn't nearby, but I remember checking the lable and it was an 'SS' (00). That and it was sold as a 2000 model. This is the 6hp they've made for some time now, and is very similiar to the 8hp.
Oh, hang on - I have the sales reciept with the model number (which I verified against the engine at the time of purchase): J6RSSM
If my memory is bad, they could have been QL87YC, but I remember the heat range as being significantly different than the reccomended.

Thank you again Bubbakat and seahorse for your time and patience.

On the sparkplug chart that I referenced, the smallest engine using the QL78YC is the 28 hp Jet. Could the dealer have installed whatever was handy?

BoatBuoy - that would be a possibility. Or mabey a dumb screwup. But QL78YC is coming from memory, so I could be mistaken. Mabey they were QL77JC4.

Damn, now I'm starting to think they were QL77JC4.

Paul,

I found that the factory 2004 chart is wrong,it didn't list a 6hp for 2000. The 2000 6hp 2-stroke takes the QL86C plug and as an option, can use the QL77JC4 or the L16V-Z according to the parts book. The QL82C V-4 sparkplug may be easier to find and it's heatrange is right between the '86 and the '77 plugs.

Great! I think I will try out the QL82C - this engine gets used at both extremes a lot, and it's had a little trouble running slow for extended periods.
Very enlightening - thanks a million seahorse!
Thanks BoatBuoy and Bubbakat too.
