I have a 1967, 9.8hp Merc. The manual I have said to put in a champion L4J plug. The place I went to didn't have this plug but cross referenced it to an Auto lite plug. I was told I should have used the champion because it is a better plug. Does any one know if there is there a notable difference between them?

Thanks

I always say go with what the manufacturer recommends, but even I use NGK plugs instead of Champions...

I'm sure they will claim they make them somehow differently than another brand to do something better (Better spark, fouling prevention) but it might be BS...

As long as the heat range is the same it should run fine, we all have favorite brands of parts and it doesn't take a lot to get a disagrement going, but I would run what you have and if you don't get good service, then I would change them--Bob
