Spark Plug question

I may have asked this type of question last year, but forgot the information. Engine: 1985 Force 85 hp O/B. The plugs that are in it don't have electrode's on the fire end of the plug. What are these type of plug called? Where would I find new one's? I've looked in several different store's, not marine shops, & did not see this kind of plug. I'll be stopping at a boat repair shop later today & don't want to sound like a total Yo-Yo trying to describe the plug so if someone could tell me the name of this type of plug, I'll feel a little better. Thanks, Maxx

Re: Spark Plug question

They're called "surface gap" or "surface discharge" plugs.

I think Champion is made in the USA(I think) that's why I use them.

Re: Spark Plug question

Last set of UL-18V Champions I tried a few years ago had "Made in Mexico" printed on the box. The circular gap on two of the plugs wasn't circular, it was hex shaped. The center electrodes on three of the plugs stuck out at varying lengths. I switched to NGK's and haven't seen any such discrepancies in the way the plugs look. Maybe I just got a bad set of Champions.

Re: Spark Plug question

Do I have to use "perma-gap" plugs if that's what was in there? If I put a normal plug in there won't it top out on the piston? I'll just put the exact same kind, (name brand), of plugs in there that come out, they seem to working fine. I just want new ones for piece of mind, not knowing how old or long they have been in there.

Re: Spark Plug question

Big debate on replaceing surface discharge with side electrode plugs..If it was intended to have surface discharge and it works with them stick to the surface discharge .. Some have fitted auto style plugs and burnt holes in the piston thhough I suspect of the wrong heat range ... If yours had side electrode plugs let us know the number for future reference as they have proved ok
