1989 50hp evinrude, just changed the old NGK-BR9-H
Plugs over to champion QL77-JC4 which i see are the recommended spark plugs.
Maybe the old plugs were bad, but i notice a huge difference in performance. better idling, better topend.

the preset gap on the champions was .044.

Could this be the difference ?

Re: sparkplugs

I think the biggest difference would be the RFI suppression method. The Champion 'Q' series plugs use an inductor which is more compatible with the OMC igniton systems, where the NGK BR series use a straight resistor.

Set the gap to whatever your manual reccomends. 'Preset' really means 'Came out as'. :D

Re: sparkplugs

An old advertising trick. Always compare new plugs to old worn ones. "See how much better our (new) plugs are than your old brand??"

Re: sparkplugs

this may be a stupid question, but how long should a set of plugs last ?
do they wear out quicker on a 2-stroke motor ?

Re: sparkplugs

Dhadley is hitting on a very true sales trick, but please understand he IS a Champion man when it comes to J/E, and they are the plugs that belong in your engine.
I don't want you thinking just any "new" plug will work great in your engine....Champions only in that 'Rude.

Re: sparkplugs

Sparkplugs can wear out quicker on a 2-stroke. They fire twice as often as on many 4-strokes. They also tend to get more deposits building up on them with oil burning with the gas. But a set should last several years depending on use.
