Damn! So this weekend while playing some sandbar football there was an errant toss. Somehow the ball hit dead center of the speaker grille and went through it. Damaging the speaker and rendering it unusable. How it managed to hit it just perfectly I do not know but I watched it happen:eek:

BTW I handled it relly cool considering that the boat is only 3 weeks old.

Which brings me to the point of the post. Now I am in the market for at least a pair of replacement speakers probably gonna just do all four. No amp just my 4x60watt head unit. Does anyone have any recomendations for speakers. Just want good quality sound. All four speakers are 6 1/2.

Thanks guys

Ditto!!!:D
My boat has six Pioneer speakers in it. My last boat had Pioneers as well.

Now, as for the football, get the passer to throw like that but to a receiver and he might have a shot at playing with the Bears.:D:p

I agree with a name you know. My boat has 4 Pioneer speakers in it.
what do you guys suggest for bass? 10" woofer or bass tube? I want the wakeboarder to hear the music too.

Re: Speakers

I got one of those inexpensive Bazooka tubes from Wal-Mart and put it in my truck. Granted my cab is a smaller, enclosed space but that thing POUNDS! And it was dead simple to hook up.

Re: Speakers

Good luck getting the wakeboarder to hear much of the music by using the head units power. It likely only puts out 20-30Wx4 RMS, so you aren't providing much power. I wold just get a 5-channel amp and run the 4 speakers off of that plus a subwoofer on the 5th channel. 50Wx4RMS would be okay, but 75Wx4 would be better. The sub can work on as little as 150rms and be effective, I'd go with a single 10".

Re: Speakers

Amp is on my list of things to buy, along with more speakers and a sub. I'm trying to determine what size amp to get but first I need to decide what and how many speakers I want to hook up.

What kind of setups are you guys using?

The best advise I can give you here is;
It is best if you start your own thread in the electronics forum. You will get more responses and they will be directed to your needs.:D

Cutting in on someone elses post the frowned upon.:(

Right, No problem. Disregard my last. Do not answer that question till I get a new thread open.

doesn't the power amp pull alot of power? most boat motors do'nt put out much amperage. I'm trying to figure this out myself

Re: Speakers

I also love the Polk speakers, had 4, 5.25's and an Alpine 10" sub and is Rocked! The 4 Polk's ran from my Sony head unit 50 x 4, and I bridged my clairion amp mono sending ~ 400 watts to the sub. Polk's are incredible!

Re: Speakers

I will also put in my vote for Polk Audio, I've used their dB subs and the Momo 6.5" 2-ways in autos. The are very punchy and built to last while not being excessively power-hungry.

Amplifiers run on the standard 12-14V that your battery/alternators put out. The total watts of the amp will determine how quickly is drains your battery without the engine running. I wouldn't worry about running anything under 1000W, but after that they get power hungry. Many people run a dual battery setup with a deep cycle as a backup to run the radio and lights when they are anchored/beached. When it's time to start up they switch back to the starting battery and let the deep cycle charge back up.

no matter what you buy, keep in mind they will sound better and better over time as they break in. im a classic rock guy, but i do like the punch of bass. i was thinking of a sub for my truck and im glad i waited. 3 months into my new speakers and the bass is amazing.

Regardless of speaker brand/age you still can't beat physics. A certain sized speaker is optimized to produce a specific range of frequencies. Trying to get a 6.5" speaker to produce the clean, chest thumping bass of a 10" just isn't possible. Same with trying to get the best high's out of a 6.5" speaker, that's why we have tweeters. I'm not a fan of 2-12's with 1000W each in a Corvette. It's overkill and isn't balanced sound, a single 10" is enough bass for almost any car/boat IMO. Getting a sub, even small with low-power will change the way you hear music because when set up right, you get a full balanced sound. (I listen to classic rock, modren rock, hip hop, country, and some classical)

On a separate tangent, that's why I can't understand the people who buy Bose HT systems and claim them to be the greatest. You can only get so much sound/frequency out of a 3" cube, and it isn't going to do anything for mid/bass.

Re: Speakers

Thanks for the responses guys!

So I have been looking around and have kind of narrowed it down to a couple sets. Which ones woud you go with?

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_14717_Polk+Audio+MM651UM.html

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_18858_Infinity+Marine+612M.html

I have used infinities in autos and I have a set of tower speakers by them at home. They sound really good! Never seen or heard the in Marine applications though.

Polk I am not as familar with and their selection is based on you guys and a couple others.

Thanks again for the input

Re: Speakers

I have also used infinity's in auto. In general, your highs will be crisper with Infinity, but to some it may sound harsh due to the bias. The polks will have better mid-bass. I would go with the Polks personally, and I actually bought the auto version of those about 9 months ago and they are still sounding great.

Infinity's also always have a high sensitivity db rating, which means they are very efficienct at turning power into sound. (can get loud with minimal power). Polks generally are a bit more power hungry, but really sing when they have the power to push them.

I have Polks in one car, and Infinity Kappa Perfect's in another car. You can't go wrong.
