Today, as the officer was writing my ticket, he asked for my phone number(which I gave him) and my SSN(which I didnt).

Why on earth do they need my SSN to write a ticket? He wasnt happy, but I refused to give him my SSN. He tried blustering, then gave up. I am really confused.

Why would it matter? Unless you had something to hide? HC is right ....He could find out if he wanted to......JK

A SSN isn't really a common thing asked for, nor is it needed to issue a summons. It's not even needed to check for warrants, although he might have wanted it to refine his search for something. Did he ask for it in his initial questioning or did he ask you later on?

If he had your drivers license, there isn't a need for the social. Usually name and date of birth is all that is needed if you don't have your license on you. Social would be a last ditch effort to identify a person if nothing else works, otherwise it is needless. Then again, they may do things different there, so I can't say for sure...

Re: Speeding ticket question for LEO's

The area I got the ticket is on the extreme south side of a small town known to be a speed trap. The speed limit was evidently just changed from 60 to 40. The one sign that I could find that said 40, was at the edge of where all the traffic merges onto this farm to market road. THey had removed the half dozen or so 60 signs and put up the one temporary 40 sign. That really doesnt matter in the overall situation though. The got me doing 60 in a 40. Classic tail end charlie gets the goods. :)

The way it went in order:

1. He giggled my tailgate to verify that it was closed completely.

2. He checked my tire tread. (this was all on the way to my window.)

3. He asked for license and proof of insurance, which I gave him.

4. He verified the VIN on the truck was the same as on the insurance card.

5. He asked for my phone number, which I gave him.

6. He asked for my SSN, which I didnt give him.

7. He got upset that I wouldnt give him my SSN. I asked him to contact his supervisor.

8. He gave me a ticket.

Like I said, this little town is a known speed trap, it was my bad for not catching the sign. I was speeding, I have just never been subjected to that sort of treatment before.

As an aside, I had to go through that same stretch of road today.(that was how I found the one almost hidden sign.) I went 40 and had three or four cars honking and telling me Im number one for going so slowly.

It appears that you have had a close encounter with an overly zealous anal orifice :(

Could it have been a fake cop?
There have been reports on the local news about cases of police impersonators operating in the metroplex

By Wilmer Hutchins maybe? Crooked bassturds up that way, almost all of them. Does the speed go from 60 straight to 40? If so you just won the ticket. State law says speed can only drop in 15mph increments. It has to have a buffer inbetween. Something like 60 to 45, then 45 to 40. I'll try to find the law for you if this is the case.

On to your question. While at the SO they didn't have us ask for the SSN even though it was on our citations. At the PD the city judge gets pizzed if its not on there. She wants it to be able to list them somewhere. I don' really understand it because the county didn't need it, why should the city. I feel as if its just something else to tie you at the scene, absolute positive id. You were right in not giving it out if you were uncomfortable. If its required theres a BIG list of reasons you must be given to explain why its required and the legality of the requestor.

Sounds like you got the harassment treatment allright.

I will often check trunk as I walk by, habit for safety after hearing of ambushes on some officers.

I have never checked tire tread.

There is a place on the citation for phone number, but it is not necessary here. I never have asked for it.

You are required to identify yourself to an officer with a name and a number identifier. If you have your license, that is enough. Name and date of birth is usually enough, but I do often narrow it down with a SSN if a drivers license is not presented. It is easy to lie about a name and DOB, but is easy to catch an SSN. But when you gave a name and DOB or drivers license, then you have fulfilled the legal requirments of identifying yourself.

Sounds like he was just being either a jerk or did not know what he was doing.

KB, it is Crowley. They have been known as a speed trap since I move to the FT Worth area in the 80's. The guy tagged my almost at the Crowley Burleson line, then turned on his light and floored it to catch up with me. He was probably impressing the girl in the car with him.(They do ride alongs quite a bit there)

DD, the funny part on the tires is that they are new. Michelin 60k mile tires with less than 1k miles on them. :)

I called the city clerk today. Evidently the Judge wants the SSN on all tickets.

The next legitimate question would be, why does the JUDGE want them on the ticket? Having someones' social security number in many cases is just like having a key to their bank account. Propietery information has been compromised in the past through medical records. The phone number issue is another of similar danger. I used to have my phone number printed on my checks to avoid hassles. Not anymore. I say if you have trouble with that check don't call me call the bank.

I’m only 99.99% sure about this, so there is a little wiggle-room for error if needed, but I believe the city judge is prohibited from ever viewing the actual citation.

I wouldn’t give phone number and ssn to anyone putting it together with my name and address. Your citation is public record. Everything needed for identity theft/fraud is right there in one place, ready to go for anyone looking at those public records. Only recently has California started moving away from having all of that data together in the court files for people getting divorced.

Need a new identity??? ... the pulic files of the family law courts have names, addresses, ssn, tele numbers, bank statements, credit card statements w/acct numbers… All of it in a nifty little folder that is available to anyone that wants to look ... or make copies.

Well, you know the old saying, want in one hand a ---- in the other and let me know which one fills first. :) They still didnt get it.

I had a friend that recommended a lawyer specializing in traffic tickets. $49 and it will be made to go away....or at leas that is what I was told. Time will tell.
