speedometer broken after some work done by a mechanic (water-impeller)?

Hi,

I had my mercury 2-stroke outboard 135hp services last season to replace the water impeller. It turned out that the prop shaft had to be replaced as well in order for the water impeller to work properly. Perhaps unrelated but I also have a part serviced that helps keep the engine mounted to the boat (i can look this part up if needed)

This was during winterization, I am now summerizing it and have found that the speedometer is busted. It is pointing all the way past 60 MPH (the max on the dial) and there is no movement when the key is turned to power the electronics.

Maybe this is happening because the engine is not in the water (but i have the ear muffs on), or maybe the mechanic forgot to add something, or accidentally hit something?

i do not want to come to conclusions, I am just not sure why this is happening when it worked fine before i had the boat sent in. My mistake was not to check immediately after i had it serviced.

The speedometer is most certainly part of the outboard, as there is no stick (whatever) mounted on the boat that reads speed.

Is there any tests I can do to check this out? I cannot drop the lower unit myself.

Or, is there an obvious point to the problem?

Thanks for your time again everyone.

Regards,
-joel

The speedo works by sensing water pressure from a small hole on the front edge of your lower unit. Maybe something got in there and has held constant pressure on the line.

First thing to do is see if there is any jammed in the hole. I just use a small drill bit and twirl it with my fingers to ensure there is no debris. If there is any the bit usually grabs it and gets it out for you.

If the hole is clear you can see the air line going down the front of the motor and into the housing above the lower unit. You can disconnect the fitting there and see if your speedo resets. If it does then there is a blockage in the tube down into the lower unit and you may be able to clear it by blowing through the tube. If the speedo didn't reset by now then there is probably a blockage in the tube toward the speedo or the speedo needs replacing.

Thinking about it... Maybe the guy pinched the speedo line when he remounted the lower unit.

Replace the spedo. The boat would have had to go 60 and then get plocked in order to get that reading.
