Speedometer not working

My speedometer dosn't work. No leaks in the pressure line. I checked from plastic insert to speedometer and the vent holes are open nothing blocking them. I removed the plastic insert in the bottom unit, used a piece of 10 GA wire to see if the hole was blocked on down, the wire went on down seemed to be open. Air should pass freely from plastic insert to vent hole? 90HP merc 82. HELP Matt.

Re: Speedometer not working

Try attaching a foot or so of pressure line you know has no leaks to the speedo gauge, and blow into it GENTLY. I did this with my gauge just enough to see the needle move, so I knew the problem was with the pressure tube and pitot. So i just replaced them and got it working again, they're not that expensive.

Re: Speedometer not working

Mike I checked the speedo gauge I used a bottle at the end of the line apply pressure and the speedo worked. I also checked the plastic insert the pressure tube connects to. Should I be able to move air from the plastic insert and out the vent holes on the lower unit:confused:Thanks Matt

Re: Speedometer not working

OK, you have it going through your lower unit. I'm not familiar with that setup. Mine is just the pressure tube connected to a pitot tube on the transom, so both were easy to replace. If you're pretty sure the opening in your lower unit is unclogged, you might want to just try replacing the pressure tubing. It's cheap and can't hurt.

This thread might help:

I think its stoped up between the plastic insert and the vent hole. I cant move air between it and the vent hole.

Sounds like you're on the right track. TommyA from the thread i linked you seems to know what he's talking about-- if you got anymore questions, pm him. Or someone more knowledgeable than me may stop by.

Re: Speedometer not working

TOMMYA was great help. I was looking in the wrong hole the one that goes into the gear linkage cavity thats were the plastic piece screwed down in it. I was:confused:how pressure could get from thier and on. I found the hole in the very front of the lower unit about 2" up from point of the bullet. It was so cloged that i didn't notice it. Took a 1/8 drill bit turning by hand went in about 1/2" found me a emtey chalk line bottle and flushed it out from the pressure line connection at the transom. My speedo is now working it never did sense i own the boat. I notice it doesent light up. checked for light wire it don't have one. I poped the little cap no contacts for a light socket like my tack. Nice looking speedo airguide brand Thanks alot for the info.:)
