speedometer problems

I have a 97 bass tracker with a 40hp force motor cant get the speedometer to work.I replaced the gauge and the plastic piece on the transom.When I blow air in the plastic piece the gauge needle moves but when i,m on the water it wont move even at full throttle.The plastic piece is pointed down dont understand why its not working?

It will work much better if you turn the unit around. You actually have it mounted upside down. Look at the very tip of the pitot. You will see a tiny hole. That hole must point forward -- not backward.

Never seen one mounted any other way.There is a slot just above the point of the pitot where the water goes in thats facing forward.Would like to see a picture of it mounted any other way.I couldn,t find one....thanks scott

OK -- I'm bad for not looking at the enlarged picture. It is installed correctly. That said, if blowing into the tube causes the meter to move then the hole in the pitot is plugged. This happens often on the water since there is a lot of debris that clogs that hole/slot. Blow air backwards through the pitot to open it up.

I blew the air thru the pitot not the tube so I know the pitot and the tube are not clogged.
