splicing plug wire

got this 49 Evinrude that take the 6mm wires as the wires coil under the mag plate. The wires that were on it were okay, but too short and someone had spliced them with lamp cord of all things. I plan on using them, but after they leave the mag plate splice some 7mm wire in. I plan in using a piece of copper wire in the center pushed in both ends them shrink tube the splice. I can't seem to find the 6mm wires anywhere and the 7mm are just too thick.

Freddy, I'm pretty sure that isn't the answer you're looking for and I'm sure parts for a 1949 (if I read your post correctly) aren't that easy to come by. OMC used to sell ignition wire in bulk (roll). Can't remember what the size was but it wasn't that big. You might contact some older dealers and see if they still have any or can get it. It was a solid core wire.

What you want to do will probably work as a last resort, done correctly. Let's hope you can find the wire somewhere. My guess is that you've tried an auto supply and they don't have anything that small.

Most bigger auto stores (NAPA, Auto Zone and others) sell plug wire in bulk. If you can't find it there, try your local farm store and check the tractor plug wires.

The chances of the splice going to ground and/or loosing conductivity are just too great. Your local boat shop should have the proper plug wire and it's not expensive. Even if a splice works you SHOULD never have peace of mind with a connection like that. Unless of course this is a motor you plan on giving to your mother in law. Kidding. Rick.

tried the auto parts stores and the dealer and the tractor supply houses. TD tell me where to buy it and I will. Until then your comment is just crap to use your words. The problem is all of them carry 7mm or 8mm which is too big.

Freddy..try a lawn mower repair shop....I got some 6mm for my brush cutter at one...and the spark plug connector also...it was a braided steel center conductor....

If I remember I will stop by on the way home and check if he has any left or can get it...

I checked two lawnmower shops here and they are using 7mm also.

I entered the OMC field back around 1960 and although I did work on some very old models prior to 1960, I have always been aquainted with the spark plugs wires that of that era which has a steel wire core center.

This same wire was used, at least, up to the time I retired which was around 1991. My mind does not dwell in the milimeter area..... if it's not listed in inches, feet, yards, etc, it's meaningless to me.

Am I to understand that the wire pertaining to this 1949 engine is smaller in diameter than the plug wire that I have in mind?

What is the model number of that engine, hp?

model 4423. It is considerably narrower then the current 7mm or any of the 50's Johnson motors I have. The wires coil under the mag plate and rotate there in an enclosed space so they need to be narrower in order to so this. I have tried the 7mm and they are too thick.

Model 4423...... 1947-51 3.3hp Evinrude. Yep, that's pretty old. I remember them if that's the one with a glass fuel gauge on the front of the built on/attached fuel tank.

Freddyray. You might try Engine Blade and Prop, or Seaway Marine. These guys dealt with parts for antique outboards forever and could be likely helpful.

If you punch both of these names in your search engine, it'll come up.

If you do use the 5mm I was thinking you could add heatshrink tubing to the ends of the wires to build up the diameter so it fits tight in the coils and sparkplug boots.

these solder on the coils and I ordered 5mm boots along with the wire so I will be fine. I did try several old outboard parts suppliers and they all had 7mm too. I guess there is not much call for the smaller stuff. but thanks again
