SportJet 90 Ignition Problems

I have a 1994 Mercury/Force SportJet 90 in a SeaRayder, engine ser#0E067013, that continues to give me ignition problems. Although it has some age on it, I have used it less than 50 hours because I spend most of my time trolling. I seldom have starting problems, but when it does, it just will not start until I let it sit for a while (flooding?). My main concern is that it sometimes drops to about 1/2 power when running at full throttle, and once in a while it just dies completely. I don't trust it too far from home!

I have had the ignition module replaced 3 times, the stator once (it is not red), the rectifier, overspeed limiter and plugs. The motor runs great for a while after I replace the offending part, then the symptoms start all over again, but are not consistent! A former Mercury tech that has worked on this engine told me of a similar 1994 SportJet 90 that was recalled by Mercury and had the entire ignition system, including the flywheel, replaced under warranty - it has run great ever since. His understanding was that this was a package recall for the SportJet 90 to correct the ignition problems.

My question is - does anyone have any information on a package upgrade for the SportJet 90 ignition system? The forums seem to indicate that everyone does a piecemeal replacement like I have. I want to keep this boat because it serves my needs well. There must be a way to replace a specific set of components with an upgraded set that will solve these ignition bugs.

Any ideas or suggestions that I can try next will be greatly appreciated!

Re: SportJet 90 Ignition Problems

I may have just found what I was looking for - CDM Conversion Kit-90J, Mercury part # 835084A1.

The kit updates and replaces the entire electrical system and eliminates the problematic switchbox!! The kit includes a new flywheel, red stator and trigger, voltage regulator, rev limiter, 3 coils and wires, wiring harness and the miscellaneous parts you need! You remove the old and the new bolts right on. The hardest part was pulling the flywheel! The new coils and voltage reg. eliminates the switchbox all together!!! It also boosts the output amperage so your battery charges better!

The Mercury price is high, but the price from Stemtostern.com is $644. If this will definitely solve my problem, it is worth it.

Does anyone have any info on this upgrade kit and how well it works, the reliability of Stemtostern, any other ideas?

Are you sure you have a ign. problem? I know that the ign. on the sport jets gives alot of problems, when I repair one I always use products from Rapair Inc. they have a better warrenty and are better engineered than OEM (GOD I hate to have to say that) Also everbody that I talk to wants to be rid of thier Red Stators, try to disconnect your Rev. Limiter they can drive a person nuts---Bob

Re: SportJet 90 Ignition Problems

hello
check all your fuel system components as well. if its not been done rebuild the fuelpump as a maint issue. I am with laddiservice on the Rapair stuff. butthe red stator kit from merc worked okay. but merc has not built a reliable ign system in years.
we used to be a sugar sand Mirage jet boat dealer so we saw our share of ign problems.

Re: SportJet 90 Ignition Problems

Thanks for the responses so far! Here is some additional info that may help diagnose what is going on with my engine:

It always seems to run very well after having set for a prolonged period (at least two weeks). When it reduces in power, it acts like water in the fuel. I have drained the fuel lines and tank, put fuel conditioner in the fuel, drained the carb bowls, etc. Everything seems OK. Different gasolines do seem to make a difference, unless it is just coincidence.

Is it better to rebuild the fuel pump, or just to replace it? Where is the best place for parts - Rapair? Which wire(s) do I disconnect to eliminate the rev limiter?

It would be great not to have to replace my whole ignition system. But my Mercury tech thinks that is the only option left (he is frustrated with it too).

Thanks again!

I'd also look towards the fuel system.Eleven year old motor .... 50 hours... less than 5 hours a year. This scream clogged carbs,to me.

DHP
