'72 9.5 evinrude. Spark is fine, ran well, but coughed at idle (couldn't adjust it 'rich' enough on low speed setting). I assumed it was the low speed o-ring (packing) and replaced.. same symptoms. I just put in a carb kit (and replaced 0-ring again) and it runs the same. I soaked the carb in Amsoil powerfoam, and blew out all orifices...
If I choke it most of the way, it will idle quite nicely, and when I stop choking it, it will idle for just a bit, and do the 'lean' cough no matter how rich I set the needle. Could the carb still be clogged somewhere? It looked like new when I took it apart, and nothing seemed clogged by blowing air through it. It really acts like the low speed jet packing is leaking air, but I cannot see how, after twice replacing that o-ring. The needle looks fine w/o any grooves.. Any ideas would be appreciated. Also. It will stall out when low speed jet gets close to seated, and coughs even if turned out 3 turns (obviously wrong!)

sounds like you may have an air leak around your carb to intake or intake to block gaskets.

or you have missed something in the cleaning....there is a great thread in the faq's about carb cleaning......just because its shiny doesnt mean its clean..you need to get those orifices manually with some wire.

I would guess the low speed jet isn't as clean as you think. Three turns out should be plenty rich enough to stop the sneezing. I would also suggest you set it with the upper cowling in place. Try using a spray carb. cleaner and spray every orifice from both directions and follow up with compressed air as well. Did you remove the high speed jet for cleaning? Also make certain you get all the little gaskets back in the right place. I just did a carb. kit on my 73 and I did turn the slow speed needle out more than the book said to get rid of the sneezing but I don't remember the # of turns but I think it was between two and three. Best of luck. Rick.
